Offy 5499 vs 5708
Does anyone have a picture of a offy 5708 and ideally next to a 5499? Having hard time finding a picture of one.
Thanks, Ryan Paulson |

The 5499 is what they (Offy) calls a low rise, which is really at stock intake carb pad height, the 5707 has the runners another 1 1/4” or so taller, yes the runners, not the Carb pad!

Top is the 5499, BTM is the 5708 high rise. Is there a runner difference? I have a low rise, high rise looks like it has a spacer cast into it.

Neither of those two pictures are what I found on a official Offy site that they call a "high rise".

The high rise Offy catalog photo is of a Buick 455 high rise. It looks awesome, runners appear to be a lot taller, I wish offy made one like that for a Pontiac.

Yep, the Buick version looks a lot nicer than the Pontiac intake. Several years ago I called Offenhauser looking to order some parts. While on the phone I suggested that if they would upgrade the Pontiac design to look more like the Buick manifold they could sell a lot more manifolds. I was met by silence on the other end. The stuff that Offenhauser sells was designed years ago and I don't think they have any intentions of making anything new. As a side note, years ago a guy in my area ran that Buick manifold in a 70 Electra 225. From what I was told he had a stroked 455 with special Stage 2 heads that he got from Kenne-Bell. I saw that car street race many times and it was surprisingly fast . I couldn't believe the cars that he beat with that heavy boat.

That's the kind I have been talking about and I believe they did make for Pontiacs at one time.

The 5708 is a 5499 with a factory cast carb spacer added. Cheap way of making it a Hi Rise? I don't think the ports changed. My Offy 1977 1/2 catalog pic of the Buick 5882 intake is misleading. The 5708 is listed below as Pontiac version Dual Quad High-Rise Manifolds. List price July 15, 1977 $177.00.

Here a few pics of the 5499 and the 5708.
First is the 5499, the second two pics are of my 5708. Basically all that has been done is 1" extra material on the carb area.

They've been living off of that reputation for decades. The only things they do now are 1) raise prices, 2) discontinue slow sellers, and 3) have long backorders. There's been no R&D since Fido was a pup. It's a shame. |

I don't think offy ever made a Pontiac intake that looked like the above Buick design that some of you seem to like more. I've been buying used offy dual quad Pontiac intakes for years and putting dual quad setups on them and selling them, and have never seen one that looked like the Buick version.

Now there was a gentleman in the United Kingdom Taff2 I believe who cut and welded in his Offy so that it LOOKED like the Buick design runners and he posted pictures at one time of that intake on the board. That might be where the confusion comes in on Steve25's memory. I believe his engine was also boosted at the time and he removed the divider in the runners. Tom V.

I agree with the above. We cut two Offy's in half and welded the two rear sections together and came out with a pretty decent manifold. The front runners on these manifold aren't good at all. In addition to the Q-jet versions of these manifolds Offy offered three versions of the square bore design for our Pontiacs. Each version used the same base and they just raised the carburetor pad about 3/4 of an inch on each part number. The Buick version and Olds version both flow better than the Pontiacs. |

Part of the deal was advertising, with the OFFY guys listing the raised carb pad manifolds as HIGH RISE Intakes and in the old days lots of young guys wanted to say their intake was the 'High Rise' Intake.
The Offy manifolds actually do flow a bit more than the old Edelbrock Dual Quad intakes because to the long plenums and the Short Runners actually flow better vs the Edelbrock stuff when tested on a super flow 1200 bench. Tom V.

The Offy was good for 40 HP over the P65. Both intakes had a lot of work done to them.
