Default Hood clearance?

I had a 400 built for my 64 LeMans and am going to use a Performer RPM and Quadrajet on it . My question is anybody using or used this combo and if there are any issues with hood clearance? Thanks

Default Hood clearance?

I had that combo on the wife’s 65 for awhile. 1.25” dropbase air cleaner & 14x3 filter. Didn’t hit the hood.

I now have an Allstar deep drop aluminum base @ a 16x4 filter. No issues.

I’m not sure if the 64 has any different hood clearance but I would think they are close, if not the same.

Put everything on the engine. Loosely ball up some aluminum foil. Set it on top of the air cleaner. Lower the hood so that the safety latch just touches. Raise the hood and look at the foil ball. Next just engage the safety latch. Check the foil ball. If it is not crushed, put the hood all of the way down. Then check the foil ball. You want at least one inch of clearance between the hood and air cleaner. Things move under the hood when you start romping on it. That minimum of one inch is critical.

One other piece of advice on air cleaner bases... once you have determined the proper drop needed, spend a little extra on a spun aluminum base, not one of the cheap stamped units typically provided with air cleaner kits.

I fought with those things interfering with the accelerator pump arm and other issues. Purchased a 1.5" aluminum drop base, and sooo much nicer! Clears everything on my qjet and holley carbs, and has nice smooth surface for airflow.

If you have an earlier Qjet with the large/raised vent tube in front, you will need to drill a hole in either style of base accordingly.

I don't have direct experience with your year, but the 66 A body is known for tight hood clearance, and a 1.5" drop base using an RPM manifold and 3" filter was ok.

Also on the air cleaner, get one of the ones with the bubble top lid. A flat lid on a big drop can get the top of the lid too close to the carb.

I big rule that needs to be followed here is that the cleaner lid needs to be a minimum of 3/4" above the top of the Carbs fuel bowl vent otherwise it will not meter correctly at high air flow rates!

I know when I raced NMCA Top Stock one guy with a 67 GTO had one and a open scoop and a factory aircleaner pan mated to a drop base that fit that fine.

If you need a drop consider a Chevy L88 base before you use one of the spun aluminum types. The spun aluminum bases block the bottom 1/2 of the air filter and dont flow as well as the 2” drop L88, and the Chebby part is usually cheaper too.

You can usually fit a 4” filter under the hood with this base and like Steve 25 said make sure you have adequate vent to lid clearance.
