Default Got 461 running

Fired up my 461 today, Moral lifters a little noisy, hoping they settle in. Throttle response is pretty snappy. Hope to dyno soon, just need to make a couple small changes first.

that is exactly what my comp hyd rollers sound like when they get hot. i have decided just to live with it and if something breaks i will deal with it. i am not sure the sound really means any harm is being done.

Good to hear!
Cut your filter open and look for crap and if all is well then enjoy the dyno session!

Just got a 461 running on my stand - 242HR w/ lunati solid lifters - lashed pretty tight for first run. Pretty quiet.

Man - I guess I am a cheap-ass, the 750$ to dyno (for the day). Just too much. Will have to do full break-in in the car.

Engine Dynos seem very expensive for a basic street engine. If you can spend it, do it I guess.

Itvseems quite a few here choose to dyno their "basic" engines. There's a going right now with results and many many more over the past years.
There are quite a few benefits to a dyno vs just throwing it the car and hoping all is well.

$750 has been about the normal rate I've seen for many years. There are a few like Paul that does it for $500.

Either way, worth the money.

Those that haven't done it likely don't realize what's involved. It actually turns into a 2 day affair minimum if there are no problems. Even had them on and off the dyno 3-4 times that turned into a 2 week session, and extremely glad that engine was on the dyno before it was put in the car.

Honestly didn't do my research and didn't 100% listen to the guy i bought them through. Noise doesn't bother me 1 bit (i do think they'll quiet done some more with oil change and a bit more run time), what will bother me is if they hurt power or rpm, so I'll wait until the dyno before i pass judgment.

I had an oiling issue that would have never been found on a test stand and would've grenaded the engine on first or 2nd pass at track. Took 3-4 dyno sessions to figure it out. The money spent on the dyno was well worth it!

I'm sure it'll be fine. Good luck with the dyno, looking forward to hopefully hearing about it

that does sound good, and the excitement level builds! Hope you pull the number you want on the dyno,

Crap, your second post must have showed up as I was quoting, and quoted the wrong one LOL

Yeah dad had his engine on the dyno a few years back and had a pesky rear main leak. Tony would make a few pulls but ultimately the leak got so bad he would have to pull the engine back off to find out why it was leaking. Took about 3 tries on and off the dyno with different types of seals, before he decided the rear cap on the MR1 block didn't have proper venting (for lack of better description) and was pooling oil around the seal and pushing it out. Once he modified that, problem solved, but it sure was a pain in the rump.

In and out of the car would have been a royal pain, and I doubt I would have figured out the rear main cap deal.

My morel lifter equipped engine sounds exactly the same. Don't expect them to quiet down from where they are now.

If the noise doesn't bother you, probably not an issue. I've had my lifters going since 2015 with about 5000 miles a year of service. no issues with the performance or reliability of them. they're just noisy.

Great hear! I grow up hearing Rhoads lifters clatter away so it's normal to me lol.

Sounds good! They seem slightly noisier than mine. JL mounce put my mind at ease in another thread. I got about 100 street miles on my new build now...hard miles, like 30 or 40 3000 rpm clutch dumps. And winding out every gear to 5000 most of the time. I need new street slicks already and probably did not break the clutch in properly but its been fun!!!

Morel HR's are all over the map for plunger to body clearances (leak down rates). I know quite a few engine builders that will not use them for that reason. I haven't installed a single set here without a couple of "tickers" in the bunch so I just "tight lash" them and move on. Tight lashed (.020" feeler gauge between the rocker and valve then bottom them out) you'll barely hear them, but if you are adjusting them in the traditional fashion, like 1/4 to 1/2 turn down from zero lash they may clatter too much for your liking, especially when the engine is fully heat soaked and the oil thinned out.......FWIW......

Had noisy hydraulic roller lifters when hot. Adjusted them last year using the advice from Cliff. .020 feeler gauge, lifter bottomed out. Then cinched the polylock, ending up with about .017 lash. Mid-lift check I ended up with 9.050 pushrods. Over 3000 miles now and still quiet.
