Which red goes where?
OK gang.. I have both reds for my interior, the flat, solid, almost maroon, and the semi gloss (60°) metallic lighter shade. I know the darker flat color is supposed to be applied to the upper dash and instrument panel, but dies that include the dash pad, or is the dash pad supposed to match the rest of the upholstery? Thanks in advance for any guidance.

The only flat in my 67GTO is between the dash pad and the windshield. I guess they did that to cut down on glare? The rest is semi-gloss including the dash pad, front of the dash, Instrument cluster bezel and anything else painted or dyed in the interior.

Great info sir, thank you! The 66 red has both a Metallic and a darker solid red. I guess I'm confused on exactly what interior parts get which red. I see lots of variation in pics of both restored and original cars. I'm asking mainly about the dash parts. I understand there's a break in the steel dash panel, the top is the darker color with a flat finish, the bottom is the metallic with a 60° semi-gloss sheen. But is the dash housing the darker solid color and also flat, and the pad too, or am I mistaken?

My pad and bezel are semi-gloss. But, my interior is all the same color, dark turquoise, just flat in one spot and semi-gloss everywhere else.

Here’s what I used as a reference for the interior of my Tempest. Not sure if it’s the same for a GTO, but the Tempest interior upholstery is the same red metallic material as used in the other A-bodies. I only re-did the instrument bezel. I had the shop mix up a couple rattle cans of the dark red flat. The guy who mixed it up expressed to me that it wouldn’t be a truly flat flat, which made sense, seeing the resulting sheen. Turned out OK if you see the comparison to the ash tray, which I didn’t get around to painting. The existing paint on the dash face, door tops, etc. matches the red poly sample chip. When I had the dash pad out, I noticed that they had painted the top of the dash metal the same dark red flat as the instrument bezel around the speaker opening.

FWIW
Here are some old DUPONT interior paint guide sheets as well as a '66 stripped-out dash of an unrestored car showing the factory separation point for the painting degrees.
0 (Flat) at the Top and 60 (Semi) Lower and all other.

I removed the dash bezel from my ‘66 GTO maybe 25 years ago for some maintenance and cleaning.
Took a few photos showing the cut off line from upper “0” gloss to lower 60 degree gloss of the dash. Plus a factory date stamp on the inside top for my 01B build.

Interesting information here. The red interior shots look good. I had a 1966, Black with a red interior. Pontiac had some of the nicest interiors IMO.

Thank you all for the great input. My original goal was to he able to mix these colors myself, I work in a shop that mixes and sprays PPG.. Here's what I have so far.. Axalta (Dupont) was the only company that had an actual formula for the original codes. I had the store mix up a couple ounces of each so I could see how they looked. PPG had a few "camera or prophet matches'" in their color library, but only for the solid upper color. Our shop has a camera, so I sprayed out the 2 Axalta colors to see what I could come up with.. The camera readings did produce a close workable solid red, the metallic wasn't as good, but I can probably tweak it and get it better. I also bought a can of what National Parts Depot has listed for each color in aerosol lacquer.. the solid color isn't even close, too burgundy or purple, the metallic is too dark. As of now, the Axalta is where it's at, I'll probably try to tweak the PPG and get it better. I'll keep you all posted. Attacged are pics of all 3 samples of each, and then all 3 Metallics against my new quater oanel trim. From left to right it is Axalta, NPD Lacquer, and the camera match in PPG. Thanks again!
