Default has anyone put a Monte Carlo or caprice steering box in?

so looking into this, I "hear" that the more modern steering boxes will work. I am hoping to find someone to chime in on this with some experience.

Maybe you have a Catalina or a like model where you dropped in a more modern steering box.

This would definitely help me out as I need to either rebuild mine, or replace.

Have you looked into the 1993 - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee box? Should bolt right up. But you will need seat inserts for the hoses. Do a search in this and the 67 - up categories.

I put a ‘69 GP box in my ‘66 Catalina. Along with a new rag joint and a tilt column. Love it! And yes, lots of info on this subject out there.

Here are some previous discussions. They are mostly about using a quick ratio box in an A or F body car, but a lot of the information should also apply to B body full size cars.

Stuart, Truly thank you. Im a young guy in this game at the ripe age of 32. unfortunately, I was a Japanese car guy until recently and have dipped into this stuff with the Pontiac. though I got a lot out of the way work-wise, I still need help finding the nuances.

it looks these days on Ebay, they sell Jeep steering box as direct fits for 1963 Catalinas as well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/174724879943

which makes my life easier as I am really hoping to not do any special modifications than just dropping it in and putting lines on it.

I did this three or four years ago. IIRC correctly, what I used was a Lares 97 fast ratio, but still variable ratio box. I don't remember if I got it from Ames or Rock Auto. Again, IIRC, it was a late 70s T/A box.

21 years ago when I did the frame off, I did some minor mods such as fat sway bars, HD springs and Bilsteins. I ran redline Firehawks by diamondback up to the last tire change and then Michelin Primacy until now.

The stock steering box that felt normal with the factory soft suspension, never felt right with my few mods as it was just too light. Then my original box started to seep fluid so I had to do something anyways.

The new box was 2 1/2 turns lock to lock and much heavier, but felt really right for the suspension. Due to it being variable ratio it wasn't antsy on center either. Very very happy that I made this mod and made for a terrific handling car for something almost 60 years old. It could pretty much stay with my own 09 G8 GT on freeway ramps when we took both cars to shows. Pretty flat here so not much in the way of windy / hilly roads. Biggest impediment is the stock seats, and even with seat belts, trying to stay behind the wheel.

Since you're a reformed ricer (congrats), 'stance' isn't bad either. The 63 was my first old car that I purchased 21 years and it's been a terrific car over the years.

Now that I'm dreadfully old, I'm considering similar mods to my latest acquisition. The steering box is seeping a bit so I'm going to need to do something. It's already 2 1/2 turns lock to lock so fairly quick, but too light. Big sway bars and firms shocks, (maybe not as far as Bilsteins) might wake this big beefy buxom gurl up.
