Default 62GP insulation above headliner

I ordered this stuff from Ames but it seems like it might not be the best answer. Anyone here replace a headliner and if you put insulation above it what did you use. I’m assuming this stuff is rock wool and would be a pain to install.

I owned a few 62's.

Never seen "insulation". Sound deadening pads yes, actual insulation, no.

Pontiac used sound deadening pads all over. Many would cause rust/rot. One place in particular is in the quarter panel between the door and wheel opening. There is a tin brace in there and GM thought it would be a good idea to put a sound deadening pad between the brace and quarter panel. It wasn't. What it did do is rot the quarter panel horizontally, halfway between the body cove and rocker pinch weld.

There was insulation above the headliner in my 62. It was glued on with black tar like substance. A pain to remove. So should I not go back with any insulation?

You need sound deadening or your roof will sound like fingers tapping on a Pepsi can.

PUI has a new product out called Flatline that's peel and stick. Cheaper than Dynamat. They have generic sizing. Bought from Summit

Then bought this to fill in the gaps

Will the peel and stick stuff last stuck to the underside of the roof?

They all "claim" to.

Only time will tell.

Keep in mind though.... When GM stuck those pads there it was on shiny new cold rolled steel with adhesive so toxic it would be a Federal crime for use today.

They probably used asbestos too! I’ve had problems with replacing the headliners in my G Bidy cars, no matter what glue I use they seem to fall apart after a few years.

Anyone here used the Eastwood peel and stick stuff? Eastwood usually has quality products. https://www.eastwood.com/x-mat-under...51x39x1-4.html

Peel and stick items kind of make me nervous hanging upside down in the heat where the sticky can let loose. I have no experience of it doing so, but in my mind it feels like a bad idea. What I have been doing may be just as bad, but it has not failed me yet. I use dense carpet padding and use contact cement. As said before, time will tell.

The stuff Ames sent me looks like carpet pad but I think it’s rock wool. What glue are you using?

When I built my 63 GP 20+ years ago, I started using dynamat. Then a new company popped up that had more the sound deadener type material I was looking for that Dynamat didn't have yet.

https://www.b-quiet.com/

I also have it above the headliner and haven't had any trouble with it sagging or coming loose. I used this stuff on the floor, over rear axle, inside the firewall, inside of doors, etc.

Made for a very quiet car and more important is that it felt a lot more solid and 'all of piece' than before..... more German. Downside is that I probably added 50lb or so and the wind noise is more noticeable. So back to the old adage that the quieter you make a car the quieter you have to make it.
