Default 389 oil pumps differences

I know that a 1962 389 used an oil pump with a floating pickup. I also know that nobody sells them anymore. Is there any difference in size between those and the fixed pickup that replaces them? The reason I ask is my 1962 389 has the fixed pickup type now and the heads of the 4 bolts that hold the bottom cover on the pump are leaving dents in my oil pan. The pan is pushed down about an 1/8 inch where each of the bolts are located. There is no sign of damage to the pan to indicate it was pushed up.

Describe or post what the 4 bolt "Heads" look like on your fixed pick-up.
Who made the oil pump???

I've never seen different height Pontiac pumps.

I think he means the 4 "thin head" bolts of the oil pump plate.
At least usually they are supposed to be thin, or even very thin.

Maybe its a china-spec pump with standard conventional style bolt heads

The case of all pumps are the same height, ( by this I mean the gear case ) one way the difference in overall height comes into play by the thickness of the cover plate.
2 bbl motors had a 40 psi pump with a thin steel cover.

The 60 psi pumps had a cast iron cover of over twice the thickness of the 40 psi pump.

All pumps used thinner headed bolts like what you many time see on the water pumps and holding down brackets on the motors.

Who knows about the overall all height / verience of the whole pump casting itself, do you have another pump to compare it to?

Does it seem like the pump driveshaft has a bunch of excess up and down play which might indicate a pump casting who's mounting flange was not machined to the proper spec?

You need to take some pictures for us .

I don't think I can take pictures now. The pump has the thin cover. I've had thick cover pumps with counter sunk phillips head screws. I'll check screw head thickness and see if I can borrow another pump to compare. If there is not supposed to be a difference and I can't find anything I will hammer/dolly the pan. thanks.
