Hey Moe, I know where there is a great RAIV Judge convertible 4 speed that belongs in that collection. It should be finished in about 2 months. I heard that some of the guys at the St Charles auction saw the collection. I got there too late.

Having worked at a GM assembly plant, those grease markings could be anything, including the worker totaling up his paycheck. Could have come from the plant that produced the shroud and been on top of the pile when an inventory was taken.

Anyone is welcome to see the collection The pictures do not do it justice. Robert is a very friendly down to earth person & appreciates the noteriety the collection has brought him.
He has always had & enjoys Pontiacs even his first car, a 68 Verdoro blk blk Firebird convert 1bbl ohc six 2 spd auto. He still has his second car (purch 1975) which is a 68 Aluetian Blue Parchment 400 auto convert with white top, his good friends mom bought it new & he drove/rode around in it in high school. I was even riding around in that car when I was 8 years old & caught the Pontiac bug even then which led me to purchase my first car 69 GTO Libery Blue Blk Blk auto. This is the definition of brand loyalty he & I always had always will own pontiacs new & old. The collection is located in the N suburbs of Chicago & is a must see if you are in the area. Any ?????? O.K. No more teasing. 1969 T/A RAIV 4speed original engine not a stamper needs cosmetics & some paintwork, 1 repaint that is showing its age.

The numbers on the fan shroud could be the sequence number of the vehicles as they came down the assembly line. On 2nd gen build sheets there is always a hand written, four digit number in the lower RH corner which was a mystery for quite awhile. It turns out that it was put there by the line workers as cars rolled down the line. Some cars will have this number written in grease pencil on the firewall or other places. Could be that on your car it was written on the fan shroud. Check out this site for a better explanation. http://www.firebirdtransamparts.com/...er/mystery.htm Just my $.02.

Ramair2, do you have a pic of your cowl tag?
1969 Cowl Tag info superdutybob, that link is interesting. It'd be nice to have the cowl tags for those build sheets. I'm thinking that the number is for the cars coming down the line for the month. Norwood didn't do the sequential numbers like VN did. They did start doing some numbers at the bottom of the tags. I think they may correlate to this number. Couldn't find a 77 cowl tag like those buildsheets, so used a 75 tag.

John:
We have not found this hand written number anywhere on the vehicle except on the firewall written in grease pencil. It does not appear on the cowl tag. All of the information from the cowl tag does appear on a build sheet even though sometimes it is transposed. Especially interior trim codes. As you can see in the link, Firebirds and Camaros came down the line at the same time but they do not have sequential VIN's. This hand written number on build sheets is sequential whether it was a Firebird or Camaro. Kinda weird but interesting.

That code on the second gens is the rotation (or sequence) number. It's the number that tracked the car and its subassemblies as they traveled thru the plant / down the assembly line. The VIN is not relevant to the plant, it is not used during the assembly process. It's just a number that is assigned to the car.
The rotation number will not be the same as the codes on the cowl tag since the cowl tag info is for the body assembly process. Thing is I've never seen any 1st gens with a 4 digit code, only 3 digits, so I don't think the code in question is a rotation number. VINs are assigned by body line, so they will not be sequential across different car models. There's one reason the plant doesn't use them...... |

You can disagree, but I confirmed this with JohnZ, who was there (and was a plant manager and wrote the assembly article, http://www.camaros.org/assemblyprocess.shtml).
And just *why* would you protect the backseat when shipping it from the assembly plant? The fronts are what got protected so they wouldn't get dirty driving onto the transporters. You called them dealer prep covers, that I agree with. The dealer added them while doing the prep. |
