Please don't shoot me if this is a rehashed topic! Who can help me with a paint code for the 64 console? This is for the blueish/gray paint unlike the 65 and up semi gloss black that resides between the crome ribs on the console top, not the plastic base. Thanks!

Pretty sure the lower dash trim (ribbed pieces) go that same color as well, on a 64. If no one responds soon, I will PM you a mans name in Rochester NY that will surely know a manufacturers paint formula number. He is a 64 prima-donald.

Tom, I sent you a Private Message with 2 guys to contact. When you get the color info, post it on this forum. Confirm the lower dash ribs with them as well, pretty sure I'm right on that.
Good Luck |

64 dash trip chrome ribbed paint in-between.
There is no paint code for this color in any book that I have ever found. In my opinion that color (and a couple of others) were an "in the factory mix only" and never released for service. If you ordered an new chrome console top, a heater control or a lower dash chrome ribbed trim piece back in, say 1969 for your '64 Lemans or GTO the item would have come pre-painted right out of the box.
That color is a medium metallic blue-gray and VERY prone to fading from the sun. It is not like your going to be able to match it to any used 45 year old piece. Quite a while back there was a very rare and Minty-mint NOS '64 heater control up for bids on ebay. I saved the listing photo because I thought the color looked right on! (Fresh out of the box!) Notice how the color is darker than the old faded color you see in most of the cars now. I am sure it could be mixed by a good paint shop but you would have to give them an NOS sample like this heater Control to match it up against.

64 dash trip chrome ribbed paint in-between.
Pete: thanks for posting the picture of the eBay heater control, the blue looks great. I have been holding of on repainting the insert on my 65 heater control as I was having a hard time coming up with the correct color. I agree with you in that I have a 'pail' full of controls and each has a different shade, which confirms that the original paint used had very poor color stability and faded to different degrees of the original color. Problem now is trying to match the paint in your posting as the color is only as good as the printer inks when I go to print a hard copy for matching.

Heater Control Detail Paint
I understand what you are saying, another thing to keep in mind I would guess the original formula was some form of lacquer & may have even had a small amount of lead in the paint.
NOTE: The '65 Lemans/GTO heater control had a black background. My guess is they sprayed the paint right on top of the chrome, and had a mask or cardboard template as they probably painted 100s of them per day. I am sure back then whatever paint they used would stick just fine. Modern basecoat/clearcoat is sometimes difficult if not impossible to mix and get the same "look" as the old lacquer paints. Also it does not stick all that well directly to chrome. Whatever you do here I would recommend an etching primer first; such as Sherwin Williams #988. I paint gauges all the time and the color used for '66-67 Lemans and GTO rally gauges is very close to what you are looking for.

In previous threads, a guy in Mich was mixing up spray cans of the color for Scott T. restos and offering it for sale. Whether he knew the formula code or just had developed his own "matching" color in consultation with Scott T., I have no idea.
This may have been a specific color, not used elsewhere in GM, but I got to thinking that perhaps it was a standard interior color. So I looked up paint chips and found this: http://pc.dupont.com/hcl/search/imag.../Data/Domestic Cars/GM/Gm 1961-1964/CHE 1964/003763.jpg&mode=fullscrn I thought the chip for 9012-LH, Dark Aqua Metallic looked close. Pontiac called this paint Carib Aqua and used it for the Dark Aqua interior trim (Code 217 in a '64 Lemans). I'm not positive, but think the Code 217 paint is more of a greener color and much lighter than the dash/console color. 4429L is the flat upper instrument panel color that was used with the Code 217, so I assume it is also more green that blue despite what the chip color looks like. Could it perhaps be the same as the flat upper instrument panel color used with the Code 215 Dark Blue Lemans interior? That color was 4430L, seen here: http://pc.dupont.com/hcl/search/imag.../Data/Domestic Cars/GM/Gm 1961-1964/CHE 1964/003764.jpg&mode=fullscrn I guess if it was a "standard" interior color, somebody would have figured that out long ago. By the same token, hard for me to believe that Fisher Body was mixing up a custom color. Surely this color was produced by the main paint vendors and has a specific color code that existed in '64 if not earlier. Anybody know if '64 was the first year Pontiac used this color or was it used in prior years? Weren't the '63 Tempest dials also same color as in '64, didn't they have painted ribs on the dash too? |

There was a guy that sells on eBay Chad,in Nebraska, who I have EMed oer the past year, that had a paint mixed to match a 64 GP console. If that is the same color for 64 GTOs,I will EM him to see if he has any more mixed,or,if he will divulge his secret.

So, if I understand all this (and sometimes I'm a little slow on the uptake)...
The guages, the heater control and the console should all match (in theory). So, if I'm only painting my console, I should try and match my color of my guages (and then paint the heater control the same color because it's just chrome at this point). I'm not saying that my guages aren't faded, but all things being equal, they should all be the same degree faded at this point. That would be "normal" and "correct"? |
