455 cam questions
I'm sure this has been asked a hundred times but I know each application is a little different. I have a 70 Gp with a 455 and the stock 64 heads that have been ported to flow 250. I'm using the ra long branch manifolds and stock cast iron intake.I'm using a ls6 stall which I think is around 2300 and a 331 gear.It will be a street car and occasionally raced. I originally bought the 268 ex. energy comp cam but I think it needs more. Would you recommend the 274 or 284. I would still like to be able to take the wife and kids and cruise on the weekend. Also do you think 12 second et's are out of the questions and I'm also open to any other suggestions except buying a car 500 pounds lighter. Thanks

I have pretty much the same combo. 455 .030 over, #64 heads, ported. Headers. with about a 2300-2500 stall. 3.08 gears. I am running a older HO racing HC-03 cam 243/250 @ .050" with Rhoads lifters. Nice sounding idle, and streetable with the Rhoads. My TA is 3900# approx and did 13.2 in the 1/4 last year, no tuning, street tires. Will be in the 12's this year though. suspension tuning, and dial in the carb, among some other tweeks.

Your car could go into the 12s but it will take a combination of careful engine tuning and traction. To get that heavy, relatively tall geared car moving you'll need to make a lot of low end torque which will be hard to put to the ground with street tires.
I'd think something like the Crower 60242 or the 60243 with Rhoads lifters would be excellent choices. Because you are running manifolds rather than headers, and a stock intake, I'd suggest sticking with a cam that has a 112 or wider lobe separation. The narrow LSA cams (110 and smaller) work best with a freer breathing exhaust & intake system.

I run a Crower 60916 in my 65 GTO which is similar to the 60242 and it is a great cam with my 4 speed and 3.31 gears and dual quads. It is not a lopey idle but sounds great and I pull about 16" of vacuum at 900 rpm.

'70 GP curb weight is around 3,800# so add fuel, you, etc. we are at about 4,100#.
hp = weight/(et/5.825)^3 hp = 4100/(12.0/5.825)^3 hp = 4100/8.73 hp = 470hp Now playing with the DynoSim and assuming stock bore and stroke and using stock 6X's as my head w/2.11int and 1.66exh, guessing 9.5:1cr, guessing 800cfm carb, guessing dual plane std. flow, using high performance man. w/mufflers... I tried a bunch of cams and I can't get it even close to what I think you will need to run 12's. BUT, I'm only math racing!
