Default Distributor Cap

I have an original points distributor to go in my 67 400 WU block. Would this cap be correct if I am going for original? I thought the caps were black originally.

May be a good cap but for an original it should be black and I believe have a circled R on top.

Unsure about the R but black is factory and that cap will fit any gm product up to 74. You can get these anywhere AZ Oreilys Napa.

Here's what you want. For the price maybe buy two so you have one for a spare.

Heartbeat City also has 8 of them @ $295 each but I'm sure his are better.

Wow, does a car come with it? I would imagine the bakelite is really fragile at this point. Do you put this on at a car show just for judging?

Is the D308R (GM 1971244) the correct part number for my application?

I have an original that was on my car when I bought it, like new. Probably replaced by the dealership as the car had 100k on it. At these prices I would feel guilty running it.

This is the rule of thumb I see others using if you want it "just so":

1959-Early 1968: Patent Pending (no R)
1968-1972 : Patent Pending R
1973-up service replacement: patent # 276xxx R

I have purchased a couple of NOS caps with "Patent Pending R" for less than $100 each--just keep looking.

What if there is no numbers or patent info on the cap? Not sure what era my cap is.
