Yeah, I think sticking with the later Y type side rail and stuff is the way to go. I really wanted new side rails so not only not having the strip and re-dye the ones I have, used ones are usually 'cloudy' or greyed, and have to be dyed anyway. Those pieces get abuse, and the dye just doesn't last long. Guess I will take a shot at the repop ones.
Belts, whew. Yeah, still on the wall there, was thinking of using one of the aftermarket 3 point ones, since I would like to take it to a road course a couple times. I have a nice set of the separate lap/shoulder belt setup, not the 'exploding' ones, and could use 1970 strap retainers (wire ones like in A bodies), but not sure how that would look. Had another thread on that, I kind of moved on to other stuff for right now. So, I'm open for ideas on the belts. And no, not going to use the plastic sleeve retainers. .

there should be used black side trims out there for a decent price... & for whatever reason the black plastic parts dont degrade as bad & get chalky like other colors. maybe you can find some nice used ones & not have to repaint them? & im sure you know this but these plastic & vinyl parts can't be dyed, they are just painted with a flexible paint that bonds to plastics like SEM... just a nit pick of mine when so many people say dye.
lots of options for belts but repros are so expensive & some of the early ones with exploding buckles arent safe. what i plan to do is re use my 72 belts (non exploding type). the 72 & im pretty sure 70/71 dont use a plastic sleeve to hang them, they just use some plastic hooks that the belts fit in between the hook & side trim piece, kinda sloppy looking but they function good & i just leave the passenger side hung in place until needed & the driver side i let hang down on the side of the seat & grab it to put on... not much of a hassle & cheaper & easier than installing repros or ones from other years. im not familiar with the A-body set up you mentioned, but you can google pics of the 72 belt retaining set up & try something like that for now. |

Yeah, I was thinking maybe the separate belt/buckle shoulder arrangement, and the retainers that look like these: (pic attached).
Yes, SEM 'flexible paint', which they call a 'dye'. Have used it many times, and even those camel Y trim pieces I posted a pic of were done with SEM, in order to maintain the shade across all interior parts. Main reason I'm going to black is to avoid that, or I would do camel again. I don't want to do the dash, kick panels, rear 1/4 panels, etc all with SEM, over time, it comes off, regardless how well it's done. Back to the actual repop ABS one piece headliner. Anyone have pics or comments on what the process is of actually installing one? What needs to be trimmed/fitted? And if it comes rolled up, what's the best way to get it to relax flat again, in the sun? Heat? .

SEM does not call their color coat flexible paint a dye, they actually specifically state its NOT a dye. i've had very good results with SEM, have it in use on one of my cars for 12+ years on some high wear areas & it looks like the day i did it, no signs of coming off on its own, but obviously if scratched or on seats etc it will eventually come off in those areas. https://www.semproducts.com/product/...osols/aerosols from info ive read & pics ive seen the ABS headliner doesnt need any cutting or trimming, its supposed to be made to fit but i cant confirm that yet. there was a member on here that used it in his 73 & i asked for some details about the install & he didnt say he had to trim it. when mine came it wasnt actually rolled up, just folded over end to end kind of in 3rds, didnt have many creases & they seemed to come out after a few days of just laying flat. i keep it stored on end up against a wall so the contours at the rear dont go flat sitting on the floor. |

This is a Jan built '73. Has a white Headliner ( Bow style) but has the same shoulder strap holder as the hardboard design of late March and onward Firebirds.
The shoulderstrap on the right is bolted to the factory location, and is the Morris Concept. In this situation the plastic side pockets never get used as the Morris belts are 1 and done for putting them on, like a new car. |

Yeah, I am pretty sure I will go with the Morris belt setup, wish it didn't have the funky metal strap where the shoulder attaches to the roof though.
Or am I thinking of a different setup? .

The part that bolts to the inner roof, on the far right of my pic is Identical to the factory shoulder strap. The strap goes down to the recoil which is behind the seat inner rocker near the floor.

Car is going into paint, it will be a while before I do the headliner and belts.
I will definitely be using the Morris belt setup. I'm tracking this thread, will update. Should be out of paint jail by like Thanksgiving. .
