well, that's at least 3 diff mechanisms that "claim" to be correct. scott's looks very much like the first pic that dennis posted too. if others that know that they have their original jacks could post pics of their mechansims it would be appreciated.

so i checked my two jacks today:
the one that came with the car has a square cross section & is 35 inches, funny thing is the stand wouldn't hold it because it's a trapazoid stand and it had an A stamped in the front and a 6 on the back. no other dates codes that i could find. the one i bought on ebay about two years ago is only 28 inches long, trapazoid style & the mechanism is much like the first pic in my original post, i can't find any codes anywhere on the mechanism, stand or post. needless to say i'll be in the market for a correct jack, hopefully the Y style. |

Here is a picture of the mechanism that I believe is correct for the trapazoid style jack for the second gen firebirds. It looks a lot like the first picture in David's previous post but look at the angle of the pin and the pad (circled area). Also see the dotted line. The angle of the pad surface hits the stick about an inch above the top of the unit. If you look at the first one in David's post the angle isn't that sharp.
The mechanism on Scott's and Den's Y jacks I am sure are correct for those. The pin-pad angle looks the same as on the trapazoid mechanism pictured below.

I'll add some photos and data to stir up the jack confusion some more!
The first photo is the jack that came with my 04A Norwood-built TA. Thanks to this post I now believe it to be original. If you look close you can see a "1C" (3/71) in the lower right corner of the mechanism. The base for this jack is blue. The next two photos are from jacks that I bought from salvage cars. If my records are correct I actually know the VINs! They are both 02A '73s and they both have 3A (1/73) date codes which would make sense. The bases for both of these jacks are painted black. Interestingly one jack column has a silver finish and one is gold. |

I agree that at least for '70-'72 the jacks should be blue. I heard somewhere that '73 was a changeover year in colors but who knows for sure. I am not sure what the grey one came from that I posted above but the mechanism and pin-pad angle is identical to other firebird jacks I had seen, except for the two 3A jacks that giles posted pictures of above. I give up!!!!!!!

The only "numbers" I would find on my jack (the blue part that attaches to the bumper) was a 6 and an A and not even next to one another- like Davidl. My car was built in the third week of January 1972. What does this date code mean?

Please post some pics if you can. Is your jack the Y style or the trapazoid style? The trapazoid style has the date code stamped on one of the rivets.

I really enjoy the discussion about the quirks of these cars. It seems like the early cars 70-73 are a real grab bag for parts. It is nice to hear folks say that there seem to be exceptions with these cars. The Mustang camp I came from could get kind out testy when someone questioned an "absolute" Fact was, these cars were built by humans and considering the times..unhappy humans based on the strikes of 71 and 72. Frank, I have an early 72 T/A (9D) and would be interested in talking to you about any differences in our cars. Mine seems to have some 71 year carryover parts. There was no jack in the trunk of my 70 trans am when I got it. I have picked up two jacks, both from very original 70 firebirds that were being parted out. The jacks are identical and both have square shafts. There are no part numbers or date codes on either, they just say "patent applied for". The gray one has been sandblasted but was originally the same dark blue as the other one. My car came with a full sized spare and as you can see from the pictures, the jacks fit perfectly into the mounting brackets on the trunk floor. I had assummed they were correct for my car, till I read this post.

OH MY GOD!!! That is the exact same jack that came with my '71. See picture below. I didn't even think it was GM. It has the rectangular shaft just like yours. Only problems 1) it looked to be green originally, and 2) it is 36.5 inches long. How long is yours? 3) I don't have a base for it.

The jack in my 73 T/A is original and the base is black and the stick seems to be about an inch short on the brackets in the trunk. It also has that funky gold plating.

Exactly 35 inches long. FYI, my car and both the cars these jacks came from were all Van Nyes built cars, if that matters.

Mine is a VN car too. Low vin like 103xxx but built 12C. Do you know the build dates of the cars those jacks came out of?

My car's VIN is also 103xxx and it's an 04B, built April 13, 1970. The first jack I got came from a July built VN Formula 400 ram air III car. The second one came from a 70 VN built Esprite but I don't remember the build date.

I'd be interested in seeing a picture. What is the build date of your car? Also, can you verify if it is a VN car ("L" in the vin)?

here are the two i have. the blue one came with the car with a square post of 35 inches long, the black one i bought off ebay two years ago, from a 73 as i recall. looks like the blue on may indeed be original to at least my year, model & CA made.
