What lights do you have?

I'd like to add some smaller lights just over my work bench. Ideally they will just plug into a nearby outlet, which I have.

Just found this. The corner LED strips would be perfect for me!

These plug in. I simply converted the boxes where the old fluorescent lights wired in to 4 gang boxes. I flush mounted the LED's to the floor joists.

Oh yeah, gonna get me some of those. I've slowly been converting my whole house over to LED .. noticeable savings even over the CF I had before. Still have a bunch of fluorescents in the shop ... going to replace them all with these HD units ... I get sick of replacing the bulbs, dealing with the old bulbs etc.

I have 4 8ft singles in my 2 car. I changed to electronic ballasts and the thinner T-8 ? lamps, much much brighter. I was changing lamps it seemed like every other week with the old fatter lamps. Now, I haven't changed a lamp in probably 2+ years.

I replaced 34 4ft T12 bulbs with 13 of the LED fixtures. I have more light, more advantageously placed than I had with the T12's. I have to think that the 13 LED's are less expensive to run than 34 T12's too.

David your workbench is "clean" compared to mine. Same on the garage.

Since the subject has turned to lighting, how does everyone dispose of flo bulbs? especially 8 footers.

If I had this garage, I would never leave the house (or the garage)! The cabinets alone are nicer than the ones in my kitchen.

[QUOTE=Bentwheelbob;5553872]Here's mine which I built myself. My hobby was furniture and cabinet making before I fell in love with cars. The top is made from two 8' tall X 1-3/4" thick solid fire rated commercial doors wrapped in stainless. It's a little bit junkier now, and I added a 10' metal work table sort of like an island.

Check with your county's solid waste disposal division. out here in WA there are state and county programs that give incentives for many local businesses to collect them and you can take them to the dump/transfer station as well. I know the hardware store I usually go to takes fluorescent lamps. I recently needed to get rid of a broken 42" flat screen TV and the Goodwill near my house takes them as part of a state wide electronics recycling program.

I need to totally gut and re-do my garage - it has multiple problems including most of the studs in the South facing wall being dry-rotted and there being a load-bearing wall with a curb under it right down the middle. I'm going to end up installing a beam, tearing out the S. facing wall, jacking out the entire slab and re-pouring (the existing slab has more issues than just that curb) then rebuilding the wall. Then I can drywall and insulate everything and build a real nice work space. it's only 22' deep x 24' wide but it'll be the biggest garage I've had yet...

One thing I want to do is metal topped work benches. I visited an old friend who'd covered his work benches with steel plate and man was that nice. since I haven't started remodeling my garage yet my work bench consists of a solid metal office desk from the '50s.

I score them with a carbide scribe ... hold them over/in the big garbage barrel, turn away, tap them with a ball peen hammer until they explode ... then break into small pieces with the hammer.

I know ... I'm a bad man.

I set my bulbs out unbroken and let the garbage guy take care of it- I think he had fun.
