Default Help Identifying These GTO Heads

Hey, I've been told these are #13 heads but I can't find that info around the siamese exhaust port. I have a 69 but it seems like the original owner in the 1970s swapped them as the 2nd owner said it was like that before he bought it.

Can someone please identify these for me, not sure if I'll sell or hold onto.

Thanks

What is the build date of your GTO?

The heads have a June 6 1969 date, could be 1969 heads.

Maybe try taking a piece of paper and do a rub with a pencil to see if it shows anything?

Now that you said that, the head on the inside of the picture looks like an upside down 9, so

June of 1969 head.

It's a 9B Vin so 1969 in the Baltimore plant. These have to be factory heads, not slapped on after like we've thought all these decades.

Maybe 62 heads?

Well they have had work done to them seing as the guides have been cut for positive seals, the spring seats have been cut and there fitted with 7/16" rocker studs.

Can you post up a picture of the chamber side?

Maybe my eyes are tricking me however if you look at the rust on the one head there does seem to be an outline of # 13.

On my relatively new IPad, even with the pics fully blown up, the date will look like E068 or F068. Open the pic up on my wife's work computer & one can tell the "8" is a 9. Of course 13's were not cast in '68 (62's were) so the 9 confirms a VERY early '70 model casting head.

More on very early '70 production big valve heads...
Over the last 40 years ive owned dozens of '70 model 13 heads & being a number guy, my records note Ive never had a pair cast in very early June of '69. It does make sense that 13's would be cast that early. The earliest '70 model "12" heads. I have had in my hands on over the years were also cast very early June (F) of '69. A local customer has the original pair on his 70 4spd GTO engine, that there is no raised 1 & 2 casting, but the pad areas on the center exhaust port are flat, & Pontiac Central Foundary stamped the 1 & 2 on the two pads. Matt is the original owner of that particular '70 GTO & the stamped 12's are original, the pads have no appearance of being ground.

Closer confirmation of the 13 casting number...
Would be nice if the center exhaust ports on the cyl heads in the above pics were carefully buzzed with a knotted wire brush on an angle grinder. Have used Forney knotted wire wheels for decades, just have to exercise prooer eye protection & forget wearing cargo shorts. also smart to wear thick work jeans, as the even the best hd knotted wire wheel will eventually sling wires onto one's body. That type of quick cleaning will get rid of the discoloration on the center exhaust area & one can see what's left of the casting number.

The 2nd pic with the valve covers shows the 069 better on the head on the left.

Still can't see the 13 outline but I'll try hitting it soon with some sand paper and a wire brush.

Those castings appear to be bowl ported ( atleast the Intake side does) , the Exh flange is gasket matched and the Exh seats look to have a 2 angle valve job done to them.

To follow up on what OPH stated, purchased a pair of 1970 #12 heads in 1983 from their original owner, who bought a '70 Formula 400 with a 4 speed and wrecked it. At that time, the '12' was raised cast and very visible over each center port. I ran them on my '67 GTO from '88-'93, thinking that they would detonate less than the 670's. No such luck. When I pulled them, the '12' was still very visible on both heads. I stored them inside my garage, out of the weather. Fast forward to 2003, when I moved to Fresno, I noticed that the '12' had vanished from the center port of one head and was only faintly visible on the other. The raised letters had dissolved over time, just sitting there. Weird. Still have the heads, my use them some day or sell them. Running 1970 #15's on that car now, and that took care of the detonation issue.

In the latest picture the date code looks clearly to me to be E069, so May 6th '69. Doesn't that make these indisputably model year 1969 and rule out 11, 12 and 13, 15 and 16?

Thanks everyone, seems like they're actually from 1969 and most likely #62.

Are these valuable etc and what's a price for bare?

I'm thinking I'll keep them and put together a future stock long block after I go IA2 shortblock in the future.

The first pics looked like 'F' 069 to me but the pic with the valve covers clearly shows 'E'069. There even appears to be a '1' STAMPED, not cast, on the top left siamesed port in this pic...but I would think that the OP would be able to see that in person if I was seeing it correctly in this pic...so, probably not there.

Well if the op is planing on using them for a build and until the op gets to doing a CC check out, then any more posted speculation is a moot point!

To the op I would just assume that they will call for the usage of a somewhere dished piston even if the motor was to be only a 400 cid, no less something bigger!

It's E069, in person you can see the 9 opening in that digit. The other head does look like an 8 but its just the crud around the opening.

I'll keep them, they seem like parts matching so I'll just put them aside and when this short block goes I'll have the factory block still.

Thanks everyone
