Starters-please explain-help
I have 2 starters with the part number 1107781. This is the starter designed for a high compression engine for the years 61-64 and perhaps others. However, the 2 starters are not the same. One has the code 3 B 22 next to the part # and the bolt holes are 4" apart. The other has the code 1 K 3 with the bolt holes 5" In addition, the 2 are different in appearance. How is one to know what fits what?? Is there a website that answers this question? I have these 2 to sell but do not want to give someone inaccurate information. Thanks!

I'm going to guess one is early. The other late in the bellhousing mounted era.

Are they both bellhousing mount? One could be for a manual, slim jim, or hydramatic and the other could be one of the 2 left over.

The difference in bolt spacing has me puzzled. P/N 1107781 is for 1961 through 1964 so they should both be bellhousing mount, and they should have the same spacing no matter what transmission.
The 3 B 22 and 1 K 3 stampings sound like date codes, I'm guessing 1963 and 1961, but there still shouldn't be any differences. It may be possible that one or both are Frankensteins, bolted together using various parts from other cars. |

Thanks for attempting to identify these starters. I went out to look at them again. One was bought at a used parts yard, was rebuilt and tested. Works perfect. The other I'm not sure where I got it and has not been rebuilt. They both have the same part # and different bolt hole dimensions as mentioned earlier. They are actually quite different in appearance with one 11" long and the other 11.5 long. One actually looks very similar to my Tempest starter but not exactly. Oh well, the mystery I guess will continue. There must be someone at G.M that might have the answer. I guess I will just hang on to them both for now.

...that's what I was gonna say... post pics with a ruler by the holes, list what numbers you can find and ask what you feel they're worth.
(at least that's what I would do...) |

Well the mystery has been solved regarding the 2 starters. Stuart was correct thinking 1 or both are Frankensteins. I took both starters to a local shop that works only with starters, alternators and batteries. It is a highly reputable shop. He compared what a 1107781 is supposed to look like and my two. Well the one with the 5" bolt spacing is absolutely the correct one. The other numbers/letter is manu. code. The other starter is not a 1107781 even though it is stamped as such. Who knows what it will fit being a frankenstein. That starter will be eliminated from my ownership. Thanks to all who gave their thoughts and opinions. By the way, anyone looking for a rebuilt and tested starter? At least I know I have the correct one.
