Default 1974 y9 455

cast e 164 is this a firebird casting engine code? seems to be little mention of this code for some reason. is it a 74 0r 75 model year block? should still be making `1974s in May correct?
thanks in advance

I have a 1974 455 automatic Trans Am. I bought it from the original owner about 30 years ago with about 80K miles. When I first looked at it, I wasn't sure if it was the original engine because Y9 wasn't listed in the 1974 shop manual. I crawled under the car and found the VIN on the block matched the car, so I ended up buying it. I later found a 1974 shop manual supplement that listed the Y9 as a 1974 455 4-barrel engine with an HEI distributor. The HEI was a very late year change. I was really curious why the HEI wasn't also offered for the SD455 engine as well. Anyway, the Pontiac Supplement lists the Y9 as a 455 Trans Am engine.

Concerning HEI in a SD-455. Just a guess here but with the HEI coming out so late and Pontiac already knowing the SD would be discontinued the end of 1974. HEI being added would have required another complete certification by the EPA because the distributor "could" greatly effect engine emissions. IMO, Pontiac didn't want any additional scrutiny from the EPA concerning the SD engine. The EPA was already all over their butt for producing an "EVIL" performance engine.

Not to mention a new dist body would have had to be tooled for the SD block only.

The distributor bodies weren't unique for the SD455. You just press the sleeve onto the HEI and install it in the SD. Somebody on one of the Facebook Pontiac groups had an HEI with an SD455 sleeve installed on it not long ago.

This isn't the best picture, but the sleeve is a separate part. I think it is steel.
