'66 B body safe-t-track repair Texas
I have a safe-t-track rear end I took out of a 1966 GP 20 years ago and it had been sitting in a junkyard for ?? years before I got to it. I now want to install it but would like someone to go through it before installing.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a competent shop in the Houston/Austin area? |

I have had great luck with Pyle Brothers in Baytown.

if its not rust damaged and gears wear pattern/spiders looks clean nice just run it... sitting idle 30 years oiled is a good thing... mint !

I plan to open the unit this week - and if it looks decent, I may simply install it and go from there. But if not, I at least have two Houston-area shops to consider. First thing I will look for is a tech with lots of grey hair............

Biggest issue with those rear axles is failed axle shaft bearings. I would remove the shafts and inspect and roll the bearings. If they are absolutely smooth, and no metal is found in the housing, I would clean it out, put fresh lube in it and go. Then change it again some day when the lube is hot, say after 300-500 miles. The gears, and posi units are really very reliable.
