Ok, moving up from the spare tire!

The dork I bought the car from cut the rear seat deck and mounting a pair of Blaukpunt (sp) speakers with big ugly ass grilles! This will not do! I've gotten a replacement rear deck from Ames that is perforated for 6x9 speakers. I now need to figure out how to mount them!

Looking for options and opinions. Obviously, I want no grilles or screws on top. Any idea where I could get some hold-down clips or metal brackets to do this? The only other idea I can think of is to secure the speakers to the metal support with the thinest head screws I can find and then put the rear deck in but that would not be the perfect solution.

Thanks!

Mark

Mount the speakers first before installing the rear package tray. Thats what I did on my '71 T/A which uses the mesh style package tray. Make sure the screws are good and tight because you won't be able to re-tighten them without removing the package tray.

BTW, factory correct for your car is the cardboard style package tray with low-profile metal speaker grills. The mesh style wasn't used after 1972 (with the exception of the 1979 10th Ani T/A.)

Also, there is about a half inch space between the package tray and the metal shelf. You can use just normal bolts and nuts to secure the speakers. Plenty of room! I assume you got the new package tray jute padding or using the original from your old package tray? The new package tray will fit loose without it.

Thanks Dennis, that will work!

I plan on using the old padding. I looked high and low for the grilles with no luck That was my first choice!

You should have posted a "Wanted" ad on here. I have gotten at least a dozen from the junkyard. I just simply glass bead them and put on a new coat of vinyl dye. They look NOS. I did this to my '73 T/A that had ugly aftermarket speaker grills.

There are tons still left in the junkyard. Look for some grocery getters like base Firebirds or Camaros that were owned by little old ladies. Most of the time they still have the factory radio system intact.

The grills are the same from 70-81.

I'm waiting for some warmer weather to go junk-yard cruising! I'm a southern boy living up north and anything below 50 is COLD!

I was curious as to what I might find still laying around in the bone-yards. Good to hear it!

Mark,

Just as an aside because I'm not sure how original you want your car to appear, but originally, our cars came with only one rear speaker, even for the AM/FM stereo optioned cars! The speaker sits on the driver's side of the package tray. When, I got my car, it was like yours, but I put the original radio back in, as well as changing the rear speaker back to original. The sound is early 70's quality, but the real music is under the hood.

Also, maybe you already know this, but the grills you are looking for have threaded studs on them that make mounting a breeze. You can install and remove them w/o taking out the package tray.

Thanks!

I've actually got the single original grille and enclosure but I need 2 speakers in the rear! This is the best compromise I can make! Thanks!
