Last time I street raced was in the early 1970's . We were on a short road that took a sharp right at the end. The other guy never even put his brakes on at the end. I know because I was behind. He hit the big Maple tree at the end. I thought he was dead and I was going to jail. He was driving a 1962 Pontiac and put the left front wheel under the dashboard up to the seat. He was not seriously injured. He saw it coming and laid down on the front seat. Remember no seat belts.

Definitely some real stupid people out there racing. Can't believe how they were racing in between the traffic on the road, with curves no less! I was 19 years old in 1970, and with all the street racing we did, we were never racing when there was that much traffic on a road. We were always at an isolated location.

I remember when I was 11-12 years old I went to visit my sister and her husband in Hot Springs SD. I went out to cut some firewood one day with my brother in law outside of town. We turned up a long flat road before we got to his woodlot. It looked just like the starting line at Great Lakes Dragaway! Both sides of the two lane road. He wasn’t into cars really, but I mentioned to him I know exactly where the locals race.
This would have been in about ‘75 or so.

All street racing it inherently dangerous but way back when in the 80's when my town used to be small. You could always find a deserted straight road to race. I see why people race, the adrenaline rush was off the charts. Friday nights were the best seeing what people pulled up in. A guy who owned a Vega with a 383 was a monster on the streets. These cars with a 1000 hp are wild and with traction control can make anyone a legit street racer now a days.

Missouri STREET RACING, 1967 time frame.

A friend Dave Stevens, with a brand new 67 Firebird with the 400 engine, racing a 396 (325 HP) chevelle on a two lane blacktop road.

Missouri has lots of hills and valleys with those on those 2 lane blacktop roads.

Dave is in the "on coming lane". Chevelle in the right lane.

Dave is alongside the chevelle. An old farm couple come over the crest of the hill.

Dave saved their lives. He took it to the ditch.

Dave Stevens died that night doing the right thing.

We purposely avoided those people we when we went street racing or if they showed up they were told to follow our rules or leave in no uncertain terms.

We had a great place to race out on the old Alcoa road for many years until the city decided that cruising had to end then hundreds of kids who had nowhere else to go showed up on Alcoa road and in a matter of weeks our little racing spot died. Too many spectators watching and running after too many idiots. Of course this forces the local lawmen to arrive. Hard to explain what your doing on a dead end road at 10:30 PM with your drag car parked next to your trailer.

Honest officer! We got lost, then the truck died, so I had unloaded the car to drive for help when all these people spontaneous arrived. (This was long before cell phones, the interweb, and flash mobs)

I never street raced, (that's what I tell my children). A friend told me a story, He was a stock/Super Stock racer later, but when he was young he had a 442 that he street raced. One night when they were all going to an out of the way place to race his car was broken and he borrowed a Buick GS Stage 1 car and was racing with open headers and slicks. After they raced, complete with spectators, they were on the road on the way out and were met with a police roadblock. The police were separating the spectators from the racers and my friend just knew that he was going to jail. When he got up to the cops the officer started to tell him to pull over with the racers but looked at the car. He told the other cop it's just a Buick and flagged my friend to just leave. I asked him if he ever street raced again and he answered "Of course".
