Default 97 GTP supercharger problems

Hi all, well my gen1 supercharger bearings are going out on my 97 gtp coupe. It's a lovely $1900 minimum for a new 'charger unless I can find a nice used one and my bearings are really almost ready to explode! I can't bearly even keep the car running at stoplights, and I really don't wan't the bearings to give into the motor. I was wondering if a series 2 supercharger off any 98-02 is interchangable. I believe they all put out the same boost they just redesigned the bearings for greater durablility, so I don't think there would be any conflicts with the pcm or anything? Also does anyone know of any cheaper superchargers-used or non used? thanks everyone!

Well I do have a Used series 1 Supercharger from a 96 Buick Riv. It had 88,000 miles on it when the lower end of the engine went after the owner ran it out of oil, $60.00 shipped to you in WI. The coupler seems to be alittle sloppy, but that is an easy fix.

Let me know if interested.

Cammer-6, thanks for the heads up, don't wan't to sell the wrong part to someone. Good sugestion about the belt also. I change the oil in my wifes 99 every spring, I know its overkill, but cheap insurance.

Plus it gives you some "perfume" to wear the rest of the year.
I use one of those large syringes that you can buy at auto parts stores for 2 cycle oil mix.
Tried the turkey baster and it wasnt powerful enough to suck it all up.
Yumm that stuff is tasty isnt it?
Havent seen you around OHC-6 world lately.

I actually use the sprayer from a non-arasole spray bottle, but both methodes probebly work the same, I just happened to have a few extra tops for those laying around.

As for the OHC-6 board, I have trouble logging in ever sense they switched to YUKU? I have to jump through hoops just to log on EVERY TIME!!! I got tired of it and lost interest. That and I sold a 66-68 2 groove water pump pully to a newer member, sent him pic's he said he had a 67 Firebird he was adding Pwr steering to. Well come to find out he has a 69 engine in the car, and he didn't know. Ok I offered to replace it with a 69, but would wanted anouther $25.00 for the 69 pully (you know how hard 2 groove 69 pulleys are to come by) and for him to send the pully back. Well he had already "thrown out" the 66-68 pully, And demanded I just send him the 69 pully to make up for me RIPPING HIM OFF!!!! Or he was going to let every one know what a thief I am.
I told him to do it, and then the log on problems started, don't know if the two are related or not.

Yea, I've been religious about changing the 'chargers oil,car maintenance, etc. I bought the car with 97k miles and I guess it just plain wore out. So I can't put a series 2 on? I thought they were the same except for the bearing design (I know that 97's are known for their unreliability of their bearings as I used to work at a pontiac/gmc/buick dealership as a mechanic). As long as the boost is the same and the hardware to connect it all is the same a series 2 should work right? Maybe I'll take your advice and go to the gp forums. thanks

the one Jeff mentioned is not a series 2.
All series 2 will work. the best ones to get are off the park Avenues
as they are not normally beat on.
Alot of guys upgraded to Gen V so theres alot of them out there.
I think I have an extra snout if thats what you need.

I believe the series II snouts were longer and the pulleys were different sizes. To change the pulley on series I you had to change the snout. To change the pulley on series II you could just change the pulley. When I worked at a pontiac dealership we would get rebuilt replacement from Magnuson Products Inc., which deal with Eaton superchargers. We could get a complete reman for under $800. A complete reman nose drive was $220. You might want to check them out. Those prices were from about 6 years ago. I think the intake design was changed from series I and series II.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you guys yet, life's been extremely busy (and I am extremely poor at this moment) so I just drove my 97 formula for a couple of weeks. However, the snow's flying now so I had to bring the GTP back out. I have been told that there are 3 different belts for 97 gp's, 1 for the superchared 3.8, and 2 different ones for the naturaly aspirated 3.8's. By removing the belt I assume that you mean just to put a normal gt's 3.8 belt on my car. Is this true? Is there a specific part number I should be aware of, or a belt diagram, or any advice? I really don't need 40 more horsepower at this time, just a car to get me through winter. Thanks much!!

455 PWR, Doesn't your GTP use a separate belt for the compressor? My 96 Park Avenue has a belt that run everything except the comp. and a separate belt for the comp. I ran mine without the comp for quite awhile. It wasn't too bad until you floored it.

Thanks everyone for your help! I don't know what I was thinking (I never actually just popped the hood and looked.....until yesterday-and now I feel retarded) but I see that gp's run a seperate belt with it's own tensioner and everything just for the supercharger, and then they run another belt for everything else. So anyway I'm taking the belt off today and it should give me a temporary fix through the winter since my car now dies at stop signs due to the bearings in the 'charger draging the rpm's down to low. Now my supercharger won't blow up so I still can use my gp as a winter car. So anyway thanks again to everyone for your help and advice!
