Hold on man, the differential is just the part the ring gear bolts to inside the entire axle housing, the differential is what holds the spider gears and Posi with have little clutches and a springs inside as well. You don't change the whole rearend itself. The axles, ring and pinion gears and the axle housing are reused. The differential assembly is the "internals" of the rearend so to speak. You just can't used the open differential (single -track) to make a "Posi" aka "Limited Slip" aka Safe-T- Track (Pontiac name)

oh, okay, gotcha. alright, well that's great, that means i can have posi in all my cars once i have the time and money for unnecessary upgrades. i don't know how it'll happen in my wagon since the axle is about 3 feet past the rear bumper, and the car appears lower than my firebird, but at least the firebird will be relatively simple.

Lots of different slang for different things.
Around here we call manual trans - strait drives. Upwards north they mostly call them - sticks. We call the differential - rear or rear end. Some call it - axle. Some call it - third member. The carrier gets called - chunk - hog head - gut. It goes on and on ... The rear/rear end is usually where the tailights bumper and license plate mount. The axle is a long strait shaft with a wheel on the end of it. The differential is the complete rear axle housing/drive unit assembly. The carrier is what contains the ring gear and spider gears, it also determines whether its single trac or dual trac. And pepsi is better than coke. |

To add my .02 to BVZ's diff info . . .
Pontiac calls the differential housing a "carrier and tubes assembly", Group # 5.387 in the MPC. The part that contains the axle and spider gears and to which the ring gear bolts is called a "differential case", Group # 5.510 in the MPC.

Can't stand either one . . . never had a taste for ANY carbonated beverages besides beer.
Unsweetened iced tea, water, COLD 1% milk, low-sodium V8 vegetable juice, Miller Lite, and cheap trailer-trash pink wine are my preferences, LOL!

A 4-speed Sprint is a rare beast indeed, I have the exact numbers built at home (thanks to Fred Simmonds years ago) When I bought my 69Sprint it had a Correct Saginaw 4-speed installed in it, but after running the numbers we found out the car was an original 3-speed car.
But if I remember correctly they made less then 400 4-speed Sprints in 69. But being a 69 manual sprint would be the 230 HP version of the OHC-6. With the hotter H cam, and the odd valve angles, and a couple other small chages, carb ect. The standard rear gear will be a 8.2" with 355 gears. And as previously stated A/C was not available with the sprint option in 68 or 69. You could get A/C on a standard 1 bbl OHC-6. Good Luck with the car. When ou get it if you need any parts check with me I may have them.

But remember
Rare does not equate to valuable every time. Be careful not to put $40,000 into a car that will be worth $15,000 when you are done. It is not hard to do.

well, as i've said, i'm not trying to buy and restore the car to resell it. but on that note, that is the main reason why i am planning on doing everything on it(as well as my other 2 cars) myself, with the exception of paint, and possibly stripping the body down to bare steel. i might have the shop do the stripping just to make it easier on me. and unfortunately, i'll probably have to have a shop repair my '72's endura nose and fiberglass hood. i might attempt those myself, but i'm still on the fence about that.
