I've told the story here before about how one time he dumped the bike in the lights at 100+ mph. He came up to the tower while we happened to be there: his hands were all wrapped with strips of cloth soaked with vaseline. He said "well, I'll be back next week to make two more passes". The track owner said "EJ - what are you talkin' about?!?" He said "you paid for three passes and you'll get three passes". He was back the next week, with the bike put back together, and made those two additional runs, just like he promised. K

I don't know what it is but it has a distinctly 'Soviet' look. Volga maybe?

Mickey's V-twin, 4WD dragster was one cool car.

In my view, ALL of Mickey's machines were "cool". For example, the Harvey Aluminum Special (Indy 500, 1963) was quite revolutionary- just compare its profile with Indy roadsters of the time. Nay-sayers called it a "roller skate", but it set the mold for all later Indy cars.
Reading back through coverage of the inaugural Winternationals (Pomona 1961), I was reminded that he took Middle Eliminator with a Pontiac- one of his Tempest-four dragsters (I had forgotten about that, when I put the 'Top Eliminator' note in my signature line).

Finally figured it out. It is a Vauxhall Victor. Came out in '57, first year in the US may have been '58. Can't tell the year of this one, I don't think there were many styling changes first few years and Pontiac didn't sell them for long. But I'm guessing the one in the pic was a '58. Vauxhall was a British subsidiary of GM and the Victor was exported around the world. In the US they were sold by Pontiac dealers. It was no sleeper. 1.5L 4 banger, 55 BHP. Top speed was 74 mph and could do the 1/4 in 24.5 secs. |

That reminds me of a dealership in Grand Rapids Mi. that offered a free Opel in 1958 with the purchase of a Buick Limited.
