Correct Automatic shifter question
Which of these 3 shifters is correct for a 1971 Trans Am. Can anyone tell me what the other 2 would fit?
Thank you, Tom |

The one on the left in the first picture appears to be a 70-81 F-body automatic shifter. Can't tell from the picture but a 1971 Trans Am would have a ratchet shifter that you can pull down into Low and advance it to 2nd and 3rd gear by pushing the lever forward and towards the right.

I believe that in concept they are all the same - with only different brakets which would mount to the platform specific floor;
Dens is correct though - a 1971 TA would have had a ratchet shifter; The ratchet shifters are easiest to identify by the fact that the shifter arm moves to the right of it's resting position (there is more to it than that, I'm just helping identify one).

I thought the shifter on the left in the first pic was for a TA, however when you mention a ratchet shifter....so it functions like the old dual gate shifters on the GTO's without depressing the button to shift through the gears?
The other shifters are very different from the 1st one, on the left, just not sure what they are out of. Sure they are Pontiac though. Thank you, Tom |

depressing the button allows you to move the shifter in the gate(?) - from lets say D to 1...
