66 GTO Cowl Tag Questions?
I read the current post by Jeff Hamlin (titled “1966 Tempest Custom Trim Code Question”). I did not wish to hijack his thread so I am posting my questions here.
I have owned my 66 GTO since 1986, and never knew about the group codes on the cowl tag. Very interesting stuff! Here is a pic of my cowl tag: I have a couple questions: (1) After my build date of 03A (first week of March 1966), there is a space then the number 1. Does anyone know what that 1 means? (2) After my trim code of 220 (dark turquoise), there is a “-B”. Does anyone know the significance of the “-B”? (3) The last line of my cowl tag reads “Body by Fisher”, and then “22-2G”. What does the “22-2G” represent? (4) In 1966 were seat belts standard? From my Billing History Card, it would indicate that my car did not come with seat belts since they were not ordered. Box 43 is empty (Custom belts). BTW I do see the hole in the lower left bottom of my cowl tag indicating that my car did come with seat belts anchor points. This was for all seat belts or just shoulder seat belt anchor points? (5) Also on the Billing History Card, boxes 76 and 76 give you the two letter engine code ( in my case WT), but what does box 77 indicate (in my case W)? Box 78 is for my 4 speed manual transmission (it has 4 in it). (6) Boxes 70 and 71 both have the letter C in them. This CC code is for tire options, but on the order form there is no CC tire code. Could this be for red line tires? My car was ordered with Rally wheels (box 45 has the number 4). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Here’s my 66 Car Billing History, first 3 pics. Yours is the last pic.
The two large sheets from the PHS package show what most everything stands for. CC is Redline tires, I think the B designates Bucket Seats, seat belts were standard starting in 66. In 1966 Only, if Rally I wheels were ordered this car would have Red painted brake drums. Chris.

Thanks Chris for sharing those decoding sheets. My PHS is so old it did not have that second sheet. But I found them in the GTO Recognition Guide!
So you helped me answer questions 2,5,and 6. Can you shed any additional light on questions 1, 3, and 4? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Oops, Chris you did help me to answer question 4, seat belts were standard in 1966. Was there a standard set of belts and the optional custom/deluxe belts, or did every car get the custom/deluxe belts?

I believe the 1 just refers to "1"st week.
B is for the Buckets. IIRC the lower RH numbers are related to Body order similar to the tags with 6 digit sequence numbers on the upper portion of the tag. These were for assembly use and bare no useful info.

Awesome info on the belts!
Were the standard belts with no retractors, always black in color? Or were they color matched? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The “22-2G” is the gate fixture that brought the body to the frame.
I would have guessed the '1' after the date code to be for 1st shift? (the "A" already means 1st week)

Firewall Data Plates from 66 PON Builds.
First three have the “B” after trim code which indicates “Bucket Seats”. Last two shown have an “R” which I think may represent “Recliner Seat”. These last two happen to have factory recliner seat. The shift, I’m not sure of, as the last two show 5 and 9. Maybe they had a shift 5 and 9 ?? Chris.

Almost - It is the designation for the body side gate (or fixture) that brought the body side to the underbody structure in the body shop.

Would also leave out the week thing for the number.
Possibly they had a 5am shift and a 9pm shift? (at certain times of year?) Interesting that the one with a 5 doesn't look like it has a side gate fixture code?

That's what I would figure generally.
I used to work for a major semi-trailer manufacturer back in early 70's where normal time was 7 - 3:30 and 4 - 12:30am But at certain times when it would get very busy, we would work 5am to 3:30 and 4 to 2:30am Just thinking possibly they did it for overtime work. Figuring they did not have a 3rd shift.
