Kern and Craig,
Thanks for the information, did you ever run that intake on a 400ci? Where did you make peak power if you did? Thanks. Calvin Hill Hill Performance 708-250-7420 |

A feature article in Oct 1973 PHR, followed by a feature article in Mar 1974 in PHR. This resulted in "fantastic response" (PHR's words) by Pontiac fans. This lead to: Our writing two books (Pontiac HD Parts & Specs and Pontiac Engine Design & Assembly) to try and satisfy an overwhelming request for information from Pontiac fans. This lead to: Me resigning my "day job" in the USAF in order to run H-O Racing Specialties full time. This lead to selling the complete 326 engine w/TR to Selden Ruwwe to raise cash to operate the business start up. These events meant that we did not have much time to further flog the 326 or TR or the 1965 Tempest (nee GTO) race car. Here's a picture of the 326 installed in Selden's 1963 aluminum front end (non-SD) Tempest. He successfully campaigned it in that configuration for a couple of years. Then he had us build a "380" (1958 370+0.060) for that car, but that's another story. :-) |

Did Selden Ruwwe live near St. Louis or southern Il in the early 80's?
I saw a car just like his (even had his name on it) run at Benton Il race track in the early 80's. Car ran good. (never saw the engine either) Never knew jf it was him though. Maybe OGR remembers this car? So, this tunnel ram is how HO Racing started.

If I had to pick one thing, that first Tunnel Ram would be what put H-O Racing Specialties on the (inter)national map. |

The original H-O Racing "Canted carb" Tunnel Ram exists today. Here's a picture of it installed in Selden's 1963 Tempest on top of a 455SD. The carbs and linkage have been changed, but the intake is the same.

H-O Tunnel Ram, version 2
In 1976, as part of our project to build a "380" (1958 370+0.060") for Selden Ruwwe, we built a 2nd Tunnel Ram for it. This one was oriented toward possible commercial production. It used the runners from the then new Edelbrock TR1-Y TR manifold and the plenum from Weiand for their BBC TR. Here's a picture of the finished piece:

There was at least one magazine article done on the H-O ver 2 TR. It was published in the July 1976 Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine. Here's a link to it in PDF format. Be warned that it is 11MB!

Old Tunnel Rams never die
The version 2 of the H-O Tunnel Ram bought by Selden Ruwwe still exists today (Old Tunnel Rams never die...). Here's a picture of it on the floor of Selden's garage in Bourbon, MO a few weeks ago. I have no idea what the nitrous/FI holes are in the bases of the legs.

Pretty trick 'nostalgic' parts, in years to come Pontiacers will be hoarding these HO parts and drooling over them like they do now over the M/T parts.

H-O Racing had plenty of 'trick "nostalgic" parts'. The TRs were the early fun ones. Maybe someone can wrestle one or both TRs from Selden's sons and try them on a modern Pontiac race engine. That would be fun. |

Yes that would be cool, testing your state of the art back in '76 parts against modern counterparts to see how far things have advanced,or haven't as the case may be.
