I think Brooke (Burton) is driving based on the door script.

Looks like there are 5 Pontiac powered cars on the Stock Q-list. The drivers are: Brad Burton, C.W. Hoefer, Rick Unterseh, Ryan Warter, & Tommy Brown.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r=100#indextop

Scott Burton was #3 on the SS list.

According to NHRA Live Timing, In the 1st race of the doubleheader, Brad Burton was the Stock Elim winner !

Cut a .005 light & ran 10.734 on a 10.73 dial. That's some pretty good final round driving.

Default YouTube Show

Some of you guys may enjoy this series of programs.

A couple of racers interview other racers.

They talk about a variety of class racing subjects. I have enjoyed several of the shows.

The same 5 Pontiacs are on the Stock Q-list for the 2nd race of this doubleheader event. Rick Unterseh is #7, in his '81 301T Bird. He reported a blown head gasket during 1st race qualifying.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop

Scott Burton is #1 on the SS Q-list.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...UMMIT#indextop

Notice how most all Stock & SS racers now try to NOT run a sec under their index, at most races. It is because of NHRA's system for increasing the horsepower factor on engine combos.

To me, it's a rather complicated system. At SOME races, 1.2 sec under gets an automatic hp factor increase.

From what little I've read, some of the 1 sec or more under runs are also considered in determining what combos get hp added to their combo.

Default Leo Interview

Here's another driver interview some of you may enjoy.

It's Leo Glasbrenner. Most of you will remember that he raced a '68 Bird Stocker & a Pontiac powered 4th gen GT Bird. He's now racing late model stuff, but still has the '68.

Found out from this interview that his 1st drag car was his '69 Judge street car.

He talks a lot about his transmission shop, Remac Transmissions. Goes into a lot of detail about his racing trans that he races & sells.

C.W. Hoefer made to the semi-final round, for what I call a 3rd place finish. So, 2 of the last 3 cars were old shool Pontiacs !

Default Burton Bird Specs

"...Where can I find the most detailed info on Brad Burton's car?..."

That's a good question. I'll have to work on the answer.

Here is a list of what I know.

(1) Running as a 1972 Formula Firebird.

(2) 455HO engine. After NHRA jacked up the hp factor for the "Ram Air" version, a few years back, I think they switched Brad's car over to the non-RA version.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/Engine...9&MAKE=Pontiac

(3) Auto trans. Like most all the quick cars nowadays, it's most likely a modified metric 200.

In case I can't find one single source for all the info you want, please ask any specific questions you have about the car & if I can't answer 'em, I'll help you find the answer.

In case you are not familiar with the '70 RAIV Stocker Scott had, here's the link. Since Scott probably built Brad's Bird similar to his, you may be able to find some of the info you want, in this article.

Assuming they won't run the lower classes, now. Will probably still try to run the Pro classes, only, and reschedule the others.

I was able to take the turbo motor apart and change the head gasket on thursday at the track for the Phoenix double header. I made it for first round, but a -.016 redlight ended my day, and to make it worse, my opponent couldn't run the number on their car..........

How does Burton's '72 60 foot so well - I guess it is with the trans 200 metric and convertor?
What is his drive train and convertor specs if not protected information?
Thanks, Craig

Don't know the exact specs.

But, since the 455 has a lot more low end torque than the 400 engine that Scott ran in his RAIV Bird, we can assume that his converter has a lower stall speed. Scott said his RAIV car ran a 5800 stall. I'll take a wild stab & guess that Brad's 455 uses a stall somewhere between 4000 & 4500.

And, since the 455 has a longer stroke, & less cam lift, we can also assume that his Bird will run less rear gear than Scott ran. Scott said he ran a 4.56 in the RAIV Bird.

So, my guess is that Brad's Bird runs 4.11 gears.

I suppose you can run some numbers, using the known numbers. The rear tire diameter is 30". You can look up the top speed numbers from the DRC stats of his runs.

Since Scott ran a 12-bolt in his RAIV Bird, I assume Brad's Bird also has a 12-bolt. Just looked up the gear ratios available for a 12-bolt. They are: 3.55, 3.73, 3.90, 4.10, 4.11, 4.33, & 4.56. Don't figure he could run anything larger or smaller than these.

For another comparison, Randi Lyn Shipp said that she has run 10.30's & 10.40's @ 124-125 mph @ 7800-8000 top end rpm, with 30" tall slicks.

Obviously, Brad's 455 won't be geared to cross near that high. With my limited knowledge, I'd guess his round port 455 does not cross the line much above 6000 rpm, if even that high. But I could be wrong.

Just looked up several of his runs. Top speed was usually between 114 & 117. So, for trying to figure possible gear ratios, I reckin you could use 115-116 for top speed.

Just thought about the fact that he's running D/SA. That is a 9.5lbs/hp class. You can remove weight enuff to move up only 1 class. Therefore, he has to be claiming the RA engine, which has a 352hp factor. The car must also add 170lbs to the minimum, to allow for driver weight. So, the race weight will have to be just over 3500 lbs. 3500 looks to be a good number to use in the 1/4 mile calculators.

According to some of the calculators, it takes around 550hp to run 10.70 in a 3500lb car. Lots of results show Brad running that quick in D/SA.

But, the calculators show a 550hp car running faster than 117mph.

http://www.hughesperformance.com/calculators/

Therefore, I've come to this conclusion. They have Brad's car throttled back, so that it won't go quick enuff to get another NHRA hp hit. MOST quick Stockers are doing this. If they all went as quick as they could go, most all of the popular combos would soon be MUCH less competitive.

How are they doing this on Brad's car ? I don't know. Common sense would be to run less rpm. That would be easier on the engine. 2 ways to lower rpm is to shift at a lower rpm and to run a numerically lower rear gear ratio.

I suppose, you could also run a tighter converter, with a lower stall speed.

Could also let off at the 1st mph lights. I did this a LOT bracket racing.

@ 117mph, with 30" tall tires & 4.11 gears, top end rpm is just over 5500, according to this calculator.

https://spicerparts.com/calculators/...rpm-calculator.

If you up the gear ratio to 4.33, the top end rpm jumps to just over 5800. Obviously, the amount of converter slip will affect the rpm. To me, these numbers sound reasonable for what Brad is doing. So, I'd still guess he is probably running 4.11 gears. If it's not one or the other, I'd be surprised.

Stock/SS cars did not get to run. They're scheduled to get one pass Sunday, then run elims on Monday.
