Engine damage
On the way to the track last Friday and heard a horrible screeching sound and then a slight knocking noise. Pulled over and waited for recovery service.
Dropped the oil today and cut open the filter and found what's in the pics. There's gold on the blue pads and silver on the others. All pushrods are ok and each rocker is doing what it should when turning it over by hand, so I'm thinking the solid roller cam and lifters are fine. Is it possible to tell from what's in the filter whether the material is mains or rod bearing?

Any chance the scraper, windage tray or dip-stick?

I doubt it but suppose it's possible. My windage tray is one that bolts to the block under the sump, not onto the mains. The dipstick is complete no damage to it.

will the particles stick to a magnet ?
I would verify lash on the roller cam |

If the 'slight knocking' is deeper in sound and not a tapping, it'll be main bearings
My guess will be the thrust bearing got taken out.
And the gold glitter will be particles from your bronze distributor gear. Pull it out. Tear it apart. Fix. Have some more fun. It's the hot-rod way! |

Last time I had a loud screech it was a needle bearing in the torque converter

And just how would a bad part in the TC dump trash into the engine oil?
I have heard sounds like that from spun bearings so I would assume the worst and pull it all down top to bottom . Crap like what your seeing in the filter can / will chew up the piston skirts, cylinder walls and rings even if it’s just Brass from a Dizzy gear! So really you have no choice but to pull it all down in my opinion

trash in oil could be it's own independent situation, I never said a bad converter could leave trash in the engine oil 25steves
further more iam not the saying what his problem is iam simply relating a sound to a experience more often than not everybody keyboard analyzing is wrong |

In my experience, no real way to tell if it's mains or rods without tearing it down. Some people have said the knock from a main bearing sounds deeper in tone than a rod. I couldn't tell the last time I spun a bearing and wouldnt recommend running it long enough to try and figure it out
Sorry to see the damage. |

Harmonic Balancer still straight & tight?

Yes balancer checks okay.
I've only just put this back together after having the heads done due to gasket failure. I don't have the energy or money at the moment to take it out and strip it, so I'll probably wait until later in the year. Thanks for all your replies

updated engine damage
Finally got the engine out and sump off. took 1 rod bearing off and looked great, then noticed 3 bits of metal stuck to the side of the block (see pics)
turns out to be the wheel of number 4 exh roller lifter. there`s damage to the cam lobe and I can`t get the lifter out of the bore. the specs of my cam are "Len Caverly" custom SR 268/276 108 LDA / 104 ICL, aprox .690" lift with 1.65 rockers. KRE D PORTS 300cfm, Victor intake. would you suggest replacing like for like, or a different cam?

What kind of lifters were they ?
For that wheel to break up like that you would think lash would have issues for a period of time. |

not sure of the lifters but they look like Comp Enduro? the lash was checked regularly and I had the lifters out just before this happened after putting it back together after a head gasket change, all looked fine.

sorry to here about the damage. i don't know what caused that to happen but how can you judge the quality the replacement parts. i guess everything breaks.is this common with roller cam, lifter combos? is this something that should be checked for maintenance? maybe the lifespan of such parts in harsh conditions is alot shorter? i ask because i don't have experience with these things. i was a machinist along time ago and understand metal heat treating and machining. just wondering if there is a solution.
