Yes! That's what it is. I thought that a couple of the old-timers on here would know what it was.

I will have to make sure to repaint it to match the car.

Oh, and speaking of the engine compartment. Does anybody have some pictures of what the the correct plug wire hold downs look like? I know the ones on the intake are correct, but I am thinking that there should also be some that may attach to the valve cover bolts.

Default the bracket in question...

Basically there is a flimsy sheetmetal piece that is retained by the upper V/C screws. One on each side.

Those brackets in Matt's photos route the wiring to the generator and water temp sensor, but not the spark plug wires. The looms you have on the intake manifold are correct, the plug wires just drape from them to each plug. I don't think there were factory separators between each wire (like those blue ones on there now) but they do help keep the wires organized and neat. If you're going for a stock look there are separators that are smaller and black that would be less noticable.

Edit: Here's a picture under the hood of my '61. The body paint color is washed out in the photo but it's actually the same color as the '62 you're working on (and yes, I know yellow plug wires are out of style. )

Well I got another good day's work done on the car again. I started with getting the rest of the trim off the car.

Here's a few photos of it in it's trim-less glory.

I did discover another 'suprise' when I the RH windshield trim off though. I will see how an undamaged trim piece fits there to decide if I need to do some work on that spot.

Oh, and cheese country GP, you were right the first time on removing the reveal moldings from the back glass. You do have to get the tool between the rubber and molding to pop it off. But it was and UGLY job. It took me just over an hour to get those two pieces off. And yeah, I was talking to myself by the time I was done...

And here's a photo of the roof...no more white paint.

And that's all for now.

Default trim off

Jeff, Been several year's since I had my GP apart & started second guessing myself. Glad you got everything apart with no hammer throwing!! Bad word's are always a good thing instead of the alternative. Just be sure no one else is around(like the neighbor lady or the grand children). Usually everyone run's for cover under those condition's.
The car is coming along well & sure it'll be an awesome ride in the future. Sure like those '62's!!

That's car'll be sharp when it's done. I am curious as tho what's hidden on the right side under the current paint. I'll bet it's ugly, or was before it was repaired.

Yesterday I was able to get the paint stripped off the hood, fenders, doors and started on then RH quarter panel.

At the beginning of this thread I had mentioned that the previous owner had bought the car with front end damage on it. What it then did was to replace the entire front clip. And after seeing the pattern of filler on the fenders, the replacement front clip had to have been off a Bonneville. I will be removing all existing filler just to make sure things are done properly.

I do have a question though. This is the second GM car,(the first was a 57 Chevy) that the factory primer on the front clip was black. But on the rest of the body the factory primer is red. Can anybody tell me why they did this? BTW the passenger door doesn't apply in this observation since it has had a replacement skin installed.

Here's a few photos of yesterdays progress.

And here's one of the stripper in action.

Kinda looks like chocolate cake batter with a bit of marshmallow mixed in!

Jeff, My 65 GTO had the same Primer as you're describing on it.

My guess would be the HUNG parts got primed from a different source then the body did.

Blatz (and Schlitz) uber alles!

I have seen several NOS '62 sheetmetal pieces in black primer...I think Mike's idea makes sense.

"And here's one of the stripper in action. "
...oh THAT kind of stripper...

The fenders may also have been off a Star Chief...they have the narrow (Catalina) trim all the way up the car.

I have some notes about 1961 cars that indicate most plants used black primer but others (I think maybe Southgate) used red oxide. I've only seen black primer on any of my cars, all of which were built in either Pontiac or Kansas City.

Question primer color

Could the primer color be based on the final color of the car & not the plant where it was produced? Would seem a bad idea to use black primer behind light color paint like white or yellow.

That was my guess when I saw it, but I have never seen one quite like it.

Default Primer color

My 62 Bonneville had red primer under the Caravan Gold color.

No, I don't think so. The 57 Chevy I did a couple years ago originally was yellow with a black to. And it had the black primer on the front clip and red primer on the rest.

I do know one thing though. After stripping the paint on this car I am getting rid of the remaining primer with a DA and 80 grit paper. The black primer definitely comes off easier than the red...

No, My 65 G/P's got balck primer showing thru on the fenders. It's a Cameo ivory car originally.
