Smak, if the tires on it have sat for 30 years, check them over real good. They'll be flat spotted and weatherchecked. Might be wise to put on new rubber if you haven't already.

Nice lookin 2+2. Can't wait to see it all back together.

Matt,

I just thought of something else also.... I'm not sure if the '66 had them, but make sure the heat riser on the pass. side exhaust is 1 free, or 2 in the open position...

Just a thought

I know theres a little piece of metal hanging on the manifold. That might be it. What exactly does it do?

It closes the manifold up so the motor warms up faster. The problem is they sit for a long time in the closed position so they always rust and then get stuck closed so your car always runs like crap because it can't breathe

Down is open. The weight rests against the tension pin when closed. If it still has the spring on it you can tell by looking at how that works as well. When the flap is open the coil is expanding outwards. Some people tack welded them open.

The Rotella has a much higher zinc content. Much or all of it has been removed for EPA reasons from gasoline engine oils. The diesel oils like Rotella still have a significant amount in them. Very important for new cams etc. but also helpful for internal lubrication on all of these older engines.

Definitely no spring on it, lol. I'll just leave it down so its open.

I'll give the Rotella a shot.

The zinc has largely been removed from SI (Spark Ignition) oils because it is poison to the catalytic converter.

CI (Compression Ignition) oils such as the Rotella or any other Diesel oil have a good lot of zinc, which as stated by Bruce is an ideal lubricant for a flat tappet type engine.

The downside is as Diesel oils have a lot of detergent in them, it will start to free up any sludge or gunk in there and can thus create a high wear problem.

But in a fresh engine, you can't do better than running a good quality diesel oil. Remember that diesel oils have to cope with very high temperatures without breaking down but also have to be able to immediately lubricate an engine standing in way below freezing temperatures so as you can imagine, it will easily cope with your Pontiac engine.

So if you have a fresh engine can you run diesel oil for the whole life of the engine?

I am going to use the Rotella I think. I just hope this white smoke from the exhaust manifolds will burn off.

He started a family and ran out of time for it. A car that gets 8 mpg isn't exactly the best family cruiser. He is the original owner, bought it new in November of 1965. He started a restore of it in 2002 and ran out of time for it. He took the entire front end apart. I decided last summer to finish what I could. Yea, I won't sell it. I'd have to be REALLY be desperate.

Well, this was the advice given to me by my engine builder. My '66 GP (389) has run on Diesel oil all it's life since it was built for me. It's now got a tad under 40,000 miles up and runs sweet as a nut.

I actually use a local oil over here called Penrite.

I use this one

Hey guys,

was wondering if you could shoot me some advice here. I've been running the motor off and on now for a couple of weeks. Car starts up good, runs good, but after about 4 minutes of warming up, you start to get whitish/grayish smoke from both exhaust pipes. There are no signs of any smoke while it is warming up.

I definitely believe it is coolant related because there is some missing from the radiator, but it just seems odd to me that both head gaskets would both be shot. Is it possible the intake gaskets were done poorly and its getting in up there ?

Thanks
matt

If it's antifreeze the smoke will smell sweet.

I'll bet it's oil [rings reseating] or fuel [running rich] related.

Thats the thing though, it doesnt smell sweet. Something isn't right, I don't know how long I am willing to run the motor though. I don't want to ruin anything.

oil pressure is around 40 when it idles.

car gets up to about 180 and pretty much hangs there.

Seems to smoke most right after you give it gas and the engine is decelerating
