Thanks.. I'm thinking of staying with drum rears now.. only
thought of going to 4 wheel disc due to thinking I could
get the setups for less then 100 at the salvage yard.
Since that didn't work Im back to the board on the rear brakes...

I still have some time to consider it though...

thanks

Just found this thread.

I'm really glad to see this car getting a proper restoration/build.
I can't even tell you how many good memories I had in that car for the years I had it.
Used it as a daily, as a weekend car, and as a work truck for construction for a while.
I still tell people about that car. Honestly one of the absolute best daily drivers I have ever owned. Even over my modern cars and trucks.
Really hated selling it due to serious family problems back then. But I am really glad to see that it is getting a proper rebirth.
I totally remember putting the dent in the pan. I've done that to three pontiacs now on the same dip. Gotta remember not to speed so much there.

I'll be following along. And I will try to find some older pictures of the car.

OH, just thought I would mention, My 66 2+2 is barrier blue. Top and bottom.

I really like the idea of doing a two tone on the 4 door. I think it helps break up the 4 door line just a little.

Thanks for the Pics Josh..

those pics were the very first time I saw the car.. and I knew
I had found the project I was looking for.. I'll do you and it proud

heh heh I told you I wasn't going to part it out...

I cant wait to see how it looks all done. my wallet can though..

So far it looks like the car will end up with ..

-a 1968 428 with a th400 ( already have a 200r4 core to rebuild and beef up
to replace eventually for overdrive gear)
- 7k3 heads with 95 cc chambers - aiming for 9.5 CR or so
- std bore currently I believe - will see where it ends up
- cam selection uncertain maybe 067 grind ?
- still looking for 72 intake but have 75 intake and just got
real nice Qjet core from a 1978 Olds 98 Regency
- keep 2.41 rear end gears for now

- redone inside and out - paint scheme yet TBD - likely solid Barr blue

- swap to newer R4 AC system to get rid of a lot of the expansion
valve plumbing in the engine compartment plus much smaller compressor
so the engine is more visible and easier to get to #2 spark plug

- Scarebird front disc brake setups. - (rears still under consideration)

thats enough damage for now.

the history.. can you send me the info of who you bought it from.. and any
other info you can that you know of ?

I havent tried to track down the dealership it was delivered to yet but any

Hey All..

Thanks to anyone that has been following along..

New update..

I havent done much to the car the last month or so as I have been
out of a job for a few months and didnt want to spend the cash ...
The last thing I did was disassemble the rear differential and remove
the open carrier and the drive shafts.

but it looks like a new job is imminent so..

Today I took a bunch of stuff over to the sandblaster/powdercoater

- Car Frame
- all 8 control arms w/ upper front shafts
- front wheel spindles
- front sway bar
- rear diff housing w/ cover
- 4 15x6 steel rims with 5x5 bolt pattern - going black steelies with dog dish caps ?
- backing plates for rear drums ( still not sure if going rear drum or all 4 disc yet)
- 1972 Q-jet intake I just picked up
- 1 of the inner front wheel wells ( other needs a quick welding repair job on a 3-4
inch metal tear- then it will go as well)
- the windshield washer fluid container bracket off of the inner driver wheel well.

about 800 for all of it blasted and flat black powdercoat ( except intake)
and when it gets back i can finally start putting it back together..

Already have all new springs, new bushings all around, new sway bar mounts,
new sway bar end links and new ball joints I put on when i first got the car
and have about 5 min of driving time on them so far.

So the basic frame should go back together real quick. Then its scarebirds
disc brake setups for the front ( and maybe rear) , new fuel and brake lines
(br line size depending on 4 wheel disc or disc/drum setups) , then reassembling
and attaching the rear diff.

in the meantime.. i need to work on getting out the snapped off body to
frame bolts so I can re-mount the body and then its off to the body man.

Ill post pics of the stuff when it comes back in 2 weeks or so.
John

Glad you got back on track John and landed a new gig. Nice way to get things rolling. Front discs are tempting down the road for me. I saw a kit from Master Brake looked decent. Did you look at them and why did you choose Scare bird?

Ken

Hey Ken..

Mostly price... the kit you are looking at goes
for 900 or so ( if im looking at the right one)

added up Scarebirds brackets and some Napa
off the shelf stuff and it looks i can make an equivalent
system for 600-700 or so.. ( been a while since I did the math)
plus i can do it piecemeal as i have the cash available...

thats really the only reason..

John

Well that's a great reason! I'll keep that in mind if I ever have funds avail to do this.

Thanks..

thats not counting the new lines or the new Dual master cyl though..
I have to call the guys at inline tube to see what i should do about lines
going from 4 wheel power drum to 4 wheel power disc.
( all 3/16 inch lines?, can they make 3/16 lines to match old 1/4 lines ? and etc)

thats just comparing what it looks like is in the kit.. disc hubs, bearings,
calipers and pads, flex hoses.. etc..

if you havent you can go to scarebirds site and look at the brackets -
it lists the disc hubs and calipers to use.. then its just pricing it out
and filling in the rest of the misc.

John

Definitely a job worth doing during a total rebuild. Thanks for all that. It's gonna be cool with all that new hardware.

I forgot to mention Ken..

we had a car show in Old Colorado City Last Sunday.. all makes and models and
we CO POCI chapter in attendance..
but low and behold 2 Barrier Blue GTOs made an appearance ( I'll let the A-body
thing slide )

It was the first time I got to see Barrier Blue in full sun.. awesome color...
A lot of great feedback from the crowd on the hardtop as well.. it was
right next to a burgundy 66 GTO which was also nice but the blue seemed
to get all the raves...

BTW .. talked to inline tube this AM.. brake lines would be correct already..
1/4 for the main front to rear line and 3/16 for all the rest.. so just a new set
of lines .. which means no custom costs.. nice..

Awesome! Glad you got to see the color on another car. I think it's a difficult color to do with today's paints which are chemically different. I was talking to a guy who I sent close up shots of my car and compared to his recent Barrier Blue shoot, well he was annoyed. I have a little advantage, my car was painted in 1990. When it's done right, BB has a flip-flop tone to it. I've seen a few different colors in different lighting, at certain angles. But the one in the pic looks good from here. Thanks for those shots. BTW a guy in my club has a BB '66. We are billed as the Blues Brothers when attending an event together.

On the '64 2+2's I saw several in Dayton last year, first time for me. In '64 they had both the Catalina emblem and the 2+2 emblem. In '65 they dropped the Catalina.

Cool stuff.

New update today.. lots to tell..

First of all.. so awesome to finally hit hump day..

hump day on Monday ? yep..

just picked up my frame and susp parts from the powdercoater..

re-assembly can finally begin...

also, decided to go 4 wheel disc.. so ordered Scarebirds front and
rear brackets.. and already ordered the rotors front and rear...

so.. next steps are installing all the new bushings, ball joints,
front and rear springs then front disc hubs..

kind of in a quandry about the rear end diff.. have to get it reassembled
and the rear axle shaft flanges turned down a bit to fit the rear rotors..
local shop with a decent rep wants 900 bucks.. seems pretty out of line
to me.. either way.. cant swing that so ill have to have some one
do the flanges and attempt to reassemble myself.

Im going to send a email to my CO POCI club and see if someone is
experienced at it that we can sched a club project to do it and save $$$...

Thanks

John

Lookin good John. Pretty sure the rear end assembly should go well if you have the correct tools and tips. A friend of mine did the one in his race car, first timer. Patience I'm sure.

Nice pile of powder coated parts. Probably a good buck there.
