Default Instrument cluster switch installation template for Fader and Power Antenna switches?

Were these ever a dealer-installed option? Or were all switches like these installed at the factory so no template ever provided?

I'm going to start drilling into my instrument cluster, and I've got Pecos' picture and pix of plenty other cars' switches (like the Riverside and Hurst GeeTO cars that Mecum was selling at Kissimmee this year), so I can just eyeball it if necessary. Basically it's just lining up between the guage pods, and positioning it properly set back from the cluster lip, but with the AC control panel being bigger/wider than non-AC cars I hadn't seen an antenna switch to confirm alignment with that panel (it looks like it will sit a bit in front of it).

Thanks for any thoughts/ideas! And well, here's a pic of my car to enjoy while reading this post.

In '66 all Radio related power switches could be Factory and/or Dealer installed,
I would think '65 would be the same.

In the '66 Owners manual, they show the "standard" placement of power accessory switches. If you have a '65 OM it should also show this to confirm the same or similar layout.

As you have seen the switches were placed between the gauge pods, and the Bezels are stepped. They would be placed on the lower reward dropdown on the face of the Dash Bezel.
There is a hole needed for the switch stem and the guide (anti-spin) pin on the switch bezels.

This can be done in the car but many parts need to be disconnected to allow access above/behind the dash bezel, so IMO this is best done with the dash bezel fully removed.

Thanks Jeff, yes I have the placement visual references and the dash is completely out, I can’t imagine trying to sneak these in from the back especially the big fader switch with all the electronics on it.

I’m making a template from the bezel to get the spacing and sizing of the holes correct, then will just position the template by eye and start drilling.

I have a couple good shots from the Mecum cars attached. Since one car had only power antenna it’s switch is on the left, but when you also have fader or reverb switch it moves to the right.

I actually found a reference to a "template" in Pontiac instructions for installing a rear speaker, since you install the fader switch in the dash for 65's. No image or measurements though.

So I made my own, eyeballed it top and bottom about 15 times, measured it top and bottom about 10 times, and finally went for it on both installs. I wrote down measurements/distances/diameters for what seemed right to me, and you can evaluate the final pic for the results which are of my dash. My handwriting is bad but one pic says 4-3/8" for the center-to-center distance between the two switches. Since the two outer dash pods are slightly smaller diameter than the two center dash pods, it doesn't come out to the same spacing (about 4-5/8 it seemed) if you were putting one in the middle of the dash.

Next project, full AC system wiring test with 1 new switch, 2 repaired switches, and two "cheat" circuits removed from the car.

Thumbs up

Looks Good.

Like you, I studied as many factory images and examined many cars at shows to determine how to layout accessory switches.

Defogger on the left and Rear Speaker on the right.

Beauty! I don’t think I’ll be adding a rear defogger to my car (Florida) but I may add emergency flasher someday. And was a vacuum guage an option on 65 GTO/LeMans/Tempest?

Thumbs up VACUUM GAUGE

I see it only as a DEALER Option in '65. #984547

Cool thanks. I doubt I'll ever install one; I didn't have one when I first had the car so it would make it look different nowadays. Never say never though!
