Does anyone remember these ?
The original Firehawk before they put the goofy Indy 500 letters on . These are the ones I wish they would remake .

I had a set of those on my police car in 1996. I burned through them in about 15k miles. They were "ok".

They were a lot better than the Uniroyal Tiger Paws that came with my 79 Formula from the factory. They last about 20,000 miles. Even after having the front aligned twice within those 20,000 miles. Worst tires I've ever owned.

they had some in between those originals & the indy 500, they said "firestone firehawk" on the side but had a small letter "ss20" on the sidewall too.
i had them on a car for a couple years that came off a parts car i got, they were old & hard but no cracking but still balanced out & rode better than BFGs, & the letters were bright white after all those years with very light washing. same basic tread pattern for all the models, i have a set of older indy 500s on a car now & they are great tires in every way, easily as good or better than BFGs. |

The only Firestones I ever had were the "721" when they were first introduced back around 1975 or 1976. Could not keep them balanced at all. Replaced them with Goodyear Polysteel radials that lasted quite well as I remember.

I had a set on my GTO. They were round and were once made of rubber…

Firestone has made huge improvements in the quality of their tires since the Ford "Exploder" debacle. They had to. I have installed dozens of Firestones tires in the last 5 years and not a single issue. Lots of Transforce trailer tires and Destination LE II and III tires. The Destination LE tires are just as round and balance just as nicely as the equivalent Michelin tires at about 40% lower cost. I have some customers who are just in love with Goodyear tires. I average about 1 in 10 that are so bad either for being out of round or require an obscene amount of weight to balance. I have the customers send them back for a replacement. According to Goodyear, they have never made a defective tire. So the hassle of getting it replaced is huge. I leave that up to the customer who brought them to me. I only use them as a last resort. That's been my experience. I install about 100-125 tires a year in my little shop. That GTO looks beautiful with those little rice grinders in the background. Shows what cars were and what they have become.

The Firestone 721 were some of the least expensive tires to drive.
Lifetime warranty, and would have tread separation at 10~15 k miles. Take the car back, get a new tire free to include mounting and balancing. Got about 150k miles on that car, and never bought a tire after buying the 721's. Also had a set of Firestone Wide Ovals about 1968. Lasted less than 6k before they were worn out (all four, not just the rears). Jon.
