Belts for PS and ALT, 326 engine
I’m combing over the 326 that came with our latest project. We had it running and it seems like a good engine. It didn’t come with any brackets or accessories, but I cobbled together a bunch of parts that I have from various sources. It all seemed to work out, with the exception of the belt or belts. It seems that the PS belt may be OK, but the ALT belt is at the limit of adjustment and it hits the PS pump. What are the correct lengths for the belts? Or at least the alternator belt? A part number would be most helpful.
I do know that I have the pulley for an A/C car on the PS pump. It will be going back in the LeMans when we get the A/C system restored on it. |

Take string and run it around the pulleys at minimum adjustment. Measure the string then go buy belts

Right now you have a 53" belt and a 50" belt. It has been my experience that a 47" to 48.5" belt works for the alternator and a 50.5" to 52" will work for the power steering. Gates belt part number 7480 is a 48" belt, A 7515 would be a 51.5" belt and so on.

well, not the end of the world but you've got mismatched year pulleys on there with a 66 type WP pulley that used a 7/16 belt and a PS pump pulley that used a 1/2 belt. top that off with every parts store out there with bad info on showing the part numbers for 7/16 belts for the 67-up pumps that should have a 1/2" belt on them. it works, but see how deep the belt lays in that PS pulley instead of being up on top like it should be? One of my biggest pet peeves that somehow that got screwed up over the years. walk around a car show and you'll be hard pressed to find the right thickness belt on a PS pump.

That's all great info. Thanks. I do have some other pulleys on the shelf, so maybe I could find the right ones as well.
