Thats a matter of taste ofcourse - but I would go for a 1979 for sure
Why? Last year for the big cube engines, no computer, and a shaker that shakes.

'70-'73 would be my top choice. Out of the '79-'81 I too would choose the '79. But it doesnt really make any difference unless you want to keep the car original. I have an '81 with a 400 in it.........not original but I dont care, build it like you want it.

If you are picking between 79, 80 and 81 then a 79 W72 engine with a 4 speed either a 10th anniv. or a SE car. If you are including all 2nd generation cars the money right now is 70-73 T/A's and 77/78 SE's. I like them all.

79's are my favorite too. One thing you need to know is that in 79, the TA's with automatic transmission came with a 403 Olds engine, which is most of them. The 4 speed cars were the only ones that got the Pontiac 400 engine. So, don't be surprised to find alot of 403 Olds equipped TA's. It's a good engine, but not quite as strong as the Pontiac. Sometimes you'll find a 79 automatic that someone swapped a Pontiac engine into. Of course, you can always put in whatever engine you want to. I have a 79 rolling body that had a 403 and I will be putting a Pontiac 455 in it.
Of course, if you can afford it, you can probably find one just the way you want it, ready to go. If you want a fixer-upper, then it's more important to find one with a good body that is as complete as possible, rather than worry about which engine it has, unless you have several to choose from.
There are always some for sale on eBay and at www.collectorcartraderonline.com . I found one of mine on eBay and the other in a local advertiser magazine. They made more TA's in 1979 than any other year, so it should be the easiest to find.
