Kudos to my fellow PY members for taking the high road with this one.
I think most people on PY are stand up strait shooters. But there are also some that would screw anyone to make or save a little money.

Sounds to me like you're implying that you've done the "rollback" trick before. If so... shame on you. Not a very good joke either if you didn't.

I've seen the results of customers catching a dishonest used car dealer rolling back the mileage. It wasn't pretty for the dealer. Do you remember the old saying... Don't get mad, get even"? Well several customers did... and the dealer had to go out of buisness for several very embarassing reasons. And yes, divorce was also one of them. He lost everything for being so stupid. This guy even had the gall to run for a town office and paid people to vote for him. And got caught for that too.

YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID.

This thread is a bait job for whatever self serving jollies the author is seeking.

This thread was created in with my own complete ignorance and no intraspective questioning of the morals of rolling back a vehicle. It was shooting from the hip.

No I have never nor do I have any idea how to "roll-back" mileage. I certainly do not own a car lot; that was a joke.

and to also point out that dealers get 'taken' by customers....

we sold a used Volvo that was traded into us to a newcustomer...he takes it to his mechanic to have it checked out...they find that the car has the wrong year engine in it! Comes back, we check it out (something the used car manager after that incident learned to do...check engine numbers!) , sure enough ,the car we traded in , a Volvo 240 had an engine in it from another Volvo 3 yrs older...not illegal to do, but has to be disclosed, owner did NOT when selling to us, and we didnt check....but as we were considered the "experts", that cannot happen , ...so we sell him another car....sure enough ,it has another used engine in it! Customer left with a bad taste in his mouth , of course!
we check ALL our used cars at that point ,no others...but we had TWO cars that were traded in to us by unethical owners, we had to wholesale those...as a reputable dealer you cant sell stuff like that!

used car mgr got his lesson ,so did we....dont trust customers....as is also shown in this thread!

I did not know this. Not that I am getting ready to sell cars without the original engines, but what are the specifics on this? Clearly in our hobby, many cars do not have the original components. Are there age limits on this?

Just trying to keep this thread on topic, lol.

I dont think its part of sales of older cars , like where they have "exceeds odometer " or age of 25 yrs plus, or if other states have it, but Texas does ,or at least did in the 80`s when I ran our place...
you were to disclose mileage , and that inludes the engine, so if the engine is not the original, you had to disclose it...thats not just a dealer ,its all owners that sell, or sold used cars.

this was a typical used car lot as part of a dealership, most trade ins were 15yrs old or less.....if older we usually wholesaled them....

This reminds me of a thread where the poster had gotten gasoline from a station for pennies on the dollar when the pump price was set wrong. He asked what he should do. Several posters said he should pocket the money, especially because it was a gas station and they routinely "ripped off" customers.

He and I went back and forth about it quite a bit with him getting a little angry at me because I told it like it was. I told him it was theft and it was wrong, he should go back and tell the station owner about it.

Long story short, he argued with me but finally did go back. The owner thanked him and told him "Don't worry about it". I figured it would probably happen that way, it usually does. The right thing pays dividends, when you do it for the right reasons.

One thing he hadn't appreciated was my calling him a thief, but he came to realize I was right and didn't like to admit it. He had the character to take a look at himself, the wisdom to dislike what he saw and the backbone to change it.

He thanked me for sticking to my guns, but he was the one who did the right thing. He just needed to be reminded what kind of person he really was. He had posted asking for responses so I knew that he was bothered by what he had done.

This case is a little different because the OP was asking for assistance in defrauding the dealer and the next buyer. There was no mistake made. Character proves out and I'm sure that anyone who deals with him will consider it.

In a 06 ram, the Mileage is most likely stored in the cluster. If you found a cluster with lower mileage in a junk yard, the mileage would change. Sure it would be stored in the PCM, but that can be changed with a Scan tool in 2 minutes. The reason I know this? I have been a Dodge/Chrysler Tech for the last 14 years. I recently had a "side work" customer that needed The Body Control Module replaced. This was in a Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Body Control Module stores the Mileage in this vehicle and sends it digitally to the instrument cluster. The customers Jeep had 77,500 miles on it (1998), I found a used Body Control Module in a salvage yard that had 75,120 miles on it. The used one was $75. The new one, that had to be sent to an electronic repair place to be rebuilt, was $800.00. The customer would not use the salvage yard part because of the mileage discrepancy! This is a worthless vehicle that the owner plans to keep forever. I sold them the $800 unit, let them use the Salvage yard one while theirs was being rebuilt. By the time the new unit was delivered, the mileage they put on most likely made the actual mileage a few hundred miles more off than if they had just put the $75 computer in from the beginning, LOL!!! But I bet they are sleeping well Tonight.

So I probably shouldn't mention how I switched out the battery for a dead one, removed the good tires with plugged including the spare, and dumped sugar in the fuel for good measure?

Might as well laugh about it....otherwise it's just pathetic.
