correct engine compartment paint
1961 Catalina Bubbletop-
I am currently re-doing the engine compartment (engine is pulled) and I would like to know the correct paint scheme. I know that the firewall will be the same color as rest of car but what do I need to do the fenderwells? Also the radiator, fan shroud and top area of core support. If anyone has pictures of an existing '61 the way it should look-that would help! Also paint numbers/brand of paint...Thanks in advance... |

Fenderwells and core support are semi-gloss black (I'm not exactly sure how much semi-gloss, but I'd say about 60%). The radiator is gloss black. Do you have a full fan shroud that surrounds the fan? They aren't very common on '61 cars, unless you have a heavy duty cooling system or air conditioning. Usually they have just that little fan guard at the top. Anyway, the fan guard is gloss black and the fan shroud is semigloss black.

RE:correct engine compartment paint
Thanks for the response Stuart-
Matter of fact I just received my copy of Oct 08 High Performance Pontiac and inside was a '62 SD that had a very good color shot of the engine compartment that will help also...That's a great looking car! Last edited by gtogoat; 07-27-2008 at 03:10 PM. Reason: wording and spelling |

Eastwood's Underhood Black is about as close to original as you are going to get.

FYI............I stumbled on this by accident and really like it for semi-gloss. Go to your John Deere dealer and ask for quart of medium gloss black. Last I bought was like $8.00/ qt. Their flat black is called Blitz Black and both do a really nice job. I mix in a little hardener and it comes out nice and a whole bunch cheaper than the catalog stores!

Cool! I'm pretty happy with a Krylon semi gloss. That's what I used on this air cleaner (you can disregard everything else in this photo ! ) K
