Default "Day2" modifications

I just got back my 65 GTO after being with another owner for twenty years. In the meantime I played the pro touring game, which I am totally over.

Now that I have my very first GTO back, I am wanting to make a few subtle mods. There seems to be a lot of first hand knowledge on these forums, and I would like to have some references of what cool things were being added back in the day.

From steering wheels, gauges, wheel tire combos etc.

Please post pics if you have them - and Keith, can you tell me the size of the vette rally's you ran back in the day,and why you chose that route?

Thanks!

Brian

8-track player mounted under dash.

Cragar S/S wheels.

50 series tires sticking out past fenders, rear of car jacked up.

Fur.

STP, Bardahl, Moon, Offenhauser, Hurst decals in quarter window.

Glasspacks.

Sun tach on the column, stewart warner "green line" gages underdash, Hurst shifter (if it didn't come that way).

Here's a link to my PY album for the GTO. I think most of that is pictured in there:

Corvette rallys were 15x6 on the front, 15x7 on the rear.

Here's how that came about:

Naturally, when we got our car in September of '64 it had 14" wheels on it. Dad had been looking for some kind of nice, styled (inexpensive) 15" steel wheel to put on the car so when the Corvette rallys first came out they of course caught his eye. He happened to mention it to our friend, Bernard P, who worked for Grand Trunk railroad (which services all of the GM facilities).

Nothing more was said until a few days later when Bernard came bopping up the driveway with two wheels under each arm. Dad didn't ask where or how he got them and I still have them to this day.

Do I recognize that road?

Brian - I totally missed this part of your introduction until just now.

Congratulations on getting your first GTO back!

I had a similar experience with my pickup truck. I ordered it and followed it down the assembly line while it was built. I owned it for 4 years, here in Michigan and in Arizona, and then sold it to my father in law.

He had it for 18 years and when he passed away the family asked me if I would like it back. I got it and freshened it up a bit and now it is, once again, my daily driver.

So I'm the original and third owner of that truck!

Again, congrats.

Just a picture I found on a Google image search for a "Jacked up '65 GTO." Don't know anything about it.

It's Woodward Ave, down around 13 Mile Rd.

No - I put the Rally I's back on it:

By the way - this picture demonstrates another "Day 2" modification that I forgot to mention: Tow bar brackets ("tow tabs").

My first car, a '66 GTO, had hood pins. That was a popular 'day two' item in CA back then, along with everything else mentioned. Air shocks, Ansen Sprint slot mags, SW gauges, Holly Equipped sticker (even though it had an AFB) Had the chrome barefoot dimmer switch cover and gas pedal option too, which I removed right away.
