Default Need heads code for a auto RA III Judge

I just acquired an early Judge (01C) that is missing all of the Ram Air parts from above the block. The guy I bought it from sold it off along with a few other items to help pay the body shop, I think. It has the PHS and the YZ block so I know it's supposed to have the RA III heads. I found a correct intake and carb, but I am unsure of the head code to look for. Looks like 62 or 16's for an auto trans. Anyone know for sure? It currently has #15's on there and an edelbrock/ holley combo with HEI.

If it's a 69, probably 48's.

Here's a very handy reference:

Great reference site, looks like I need the #62's for an automatic. The #48's appear to be for a 4 speed. Thanks for the info.

Possibly, some of the early automatic Judges came with 62's before swapping to 48's so I'm told. Don't know when that happened, someone here probably knows exactly when if that was the case..

All the info web sites I have seen seem to show that the 48's are for the 4 speeds only. That's why I am confused about the Auto trans cars. The web site listed above called out the 62's while some other sites also list 16's. Does anyone know for sure about the 48's?

A '69 RAIII auto typically has 48s. Non Ram Air 4spds also had 48s.

I guess it would be correct to have any of the three castings? Anyone know what serial number or time frame in January they started making the Judge?

RAIII (and non RAIII GTO) Manuals got 48's....There was a few debates about the '69 Auto RAIIIs that never got clarified ..some got 62s, and others 48s, IIRC

I have never seen a virgin 69 RA auto car that had anything but 62's. MPC confirms this but again could have happened that some were like that (maybe a late change or something?)

If we are talking the GTO auto RAIII, my experience has been just the opposite of John’s. (69 F/B is different)

Have never seen a virgin 69 GTO RA auto car that had anything but 48's.
The 69 dated parts book shows the same 9795043 head for YZ and WS engines.

Have had three Auto 69 RA3 Judges over the years and all have “48” heads.

I still have one Pontiac assembly plant, May dated, 69 Judge that I purchased in 1983 off the original owner. Original from exhaust to what was left of the original tear drop RA foam. It has 48 cast heads. (Paid $850 for it – those were the days!)

Brian, I stand corrected, the parts book shows that GTO Ra auto's got the 48's
(9795043).

However, of the GTO's (mostly Judges) with RA and auto I remember seeing that were clearly virgins (mostly back in the 80's) all had 62's. They were probably all Baltimore cars (seems all 69 GTO's sold in Canada in 69 were from Baltimore). I am referring to say half a dozen cars and my memory is clear since these were junker cars and I always grabbed 48 heads and had no interests in 62's. Only car I ever saw 48's on was 4spd GTO's with 350 or 366 engine and once on a 4spd RA bird.

Brian, In your neck of the woods what plant cars are you normally looking at?

My Judge is an Atlanta built car in the 3rd week of January, any consensus on which heads I should look for? It seems as though either the 48's or the 62's would be correct?
