Default 62 GP 4 speed shifter rods

I'm finally get back to my 62 GP restoration that has sat idle for last 2 years, 5 years total. I have an unrestored factory shifter for my T-10 but missing rods. Does any know if hurst shifter rods will work with them, or Do I need to hunt down factory set. I see there is a restored unit on ebay for 1000.00, but I'm not interested yet. Also, I see a couple a vendors every year at Norwalk who just do shifters. Any one have number or good luck with any of them?

Thanks,

Mark

Hey Mark-

You can use a Hurst Competition Plus shifter with a bolt-on shifter that has a (dummy) reverse-lockout on it.

IMO, I think think the stock shifters are crap. That said, if you're building a 100-point car, you're stuck with it; but a 100-point car isn't DRIVEN, either.

Please post pics of your GP here if you can.

I have the factory shifter in mine,... yes, agree with Matt,...they're crap - as Nixon calls them - a seek and destroy. $1K is very high for a factory shifter.... about $200 is about normal.

If you're going to drive it - read Matts post again

Watch for one on E-Bay with a crappy shifter that has all the linkage. I don't think Hurst rods will work with the factory shifter.

You can use Comp. Plus deal and buy a repop handle to make it look like original.

I am getting ready to put one on E-Bay with all linkage, but it is for a bench seat car.

The reason why factory shifters are so rare was because they were crap. We used to call them the hot knife through butter shifters. Get a Hurst and be able to shift instead of hunting for gears.

That $1000 shifter has been on Ebay for at least a year now. Doubt he'll ever get that kind of green for it unless there's a truly gullible sucker out there. It's darn nice, but waaaaaay overpriced.

I've got a 5 speed in my car. Hunted for quite a while to find a shifter to modify. I ended up buying a hurst style repro for a '59 vette from Corvette Central. Matt has the right idea, get the Hurst shifter and bolt one of those vette repros on if you can.

I'll try and post a shot of mine if I can remember to do it later.

The 425A had four bolt main bearings, higher compression heads, a different camshaft, long branch exhaust manifolds, and some other minor things like a larger generator pulley. The tripower version was rated at 348hp in 1961/1962, the four barrel version was 333hp.

I've posted some photos in the past of the original shifter from my car, along with some linkage photos of the Hurst Competition Plus I have in there now. You can still get the shifter and installation kit from Summit Racing, the part numbers were posted some time ago as well. However, the numbers I posted were for a shifter in a bench seat car and not a bucket seat car like your GP; if you call Summit and tell them the application hopefully they can find the right part number - they had no problems with my order but that was many years ago.

edit: some pictures here http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=513165 and here http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=555284 (this one has the part numbers for the Hurst shifter.)

Ditto on the Comp Plus shifter. It's the best upgrade to a stick car that you can do. The OE shifters are looser than a worn out grain truck's when they're new. Seek and destroy because you never know what gear you'll catch at what RPM at the next shift.
