Default "N" on VIN tag?

On the 64 and 65 GTO, does N on the vin tag confirm 100% that it is a real GTO?

Do you mean cowl tag?

Cowl tags can be changed.

Nothing in the VIN coding confirms a GTO. You'll need the PHS for that.

The cowl tags normally show 5N for a Pontiac build, but not all assembly plants used the Group 5 codes or placed the RPO code on the cowl tag. So - not 100%.

PHS is the only way to be sure.

5N for Kansas City (Leeds plant) built cars too.

Fremont CA and Baltimore MD didn’t seem to use those codes.

To answer your question though, wouldn’t say 100% of 5N code cars are real factory GTO optioned cars, but 99% may be a better answer. Consider the fakes and factory variations.

Or, unless you find a piece of paper under the seat that confirms a GTO.

My Baltimore built Data plate does not have the 5N, but my paper in the rear seat lower cushion has the 5N in fifth group.

PHS is a must !

Chris, My 64 GTO Kansas City Built GTO does not have the 5N on the data plate either, and I know of two other cars (real GTOs built that way).

But your lack of a 5N on the data plate is the first I have heard on a Baltimore Car.
So now I know of 4 "Non 5N" built legit GTOs. John V has seen all of my paperwork and has posted many times about my 64 GTO.

Baltimore Paperwork is different vs KC paperwork. KC paperwork has 5N all together in one block

Those are beautiful. I love how the job number and body number correlate between the cowl tag and the broadcast slip.

You should have CSI check the fingerprints on that putty; maybe they would get a hit in their database and you could talk to the guy from the body shop that installed it.

Default 5N on Data Tag

My ‘65 Baltimore built car does not have a 5N on the firewall tag and it’s a PHS verified GTO

My 65 GTO appears to have the same "putty" on the cowl tag ?

My understanding (from John V, a 64 GTO expert) is that only Pontiac and Kansas City Plants put the 5N on the data plate.
So A GTO from Baltimore without the 5N would be much more common than you think. Actually very common.

The lack of a 5N seems to be only on the KC built 64 GTOs. I have never heard of a non 5N 64 GTO Pontiac Built car EVER.
