Default Door panels, re-use original upholstery on new cards

Anyone ever pull the vinyl off of a door panel and re-apply it to a new cardboard backer? I ordered the new door cards from our host and will try it, but if it doesn't work then I'll have to get new door panels from Legendary.

Yes. I did it on my 72 Lemans vert. I used clamps around the outside edges after I sprayed adhesive to keep it from coming undone. Worked well.

I know a fellow that did a pair for a trans am and they turned out like new. I tried to do a set for my TATA but the carpet at the bottom was bad so I scratched that idea. Other than that I think if you take your time it can be done successfully.

A couple of questions for anyone that has switched the existing vinyl upholstery over to a new door panel card:

Did you reuse the chrome strip between the vinyl and the carpet at the bottom? The card has holes running across it in the location of the strip. The existing does not.

There are options for the height of the carpet at the door bottom. 3", 5", ad 8". Is the 3" OK, or do you need to get the larger height and trim the carpet? I measured my door panel and the carpet seems to be a little over 3".

My door panels are Factory OE with only the Carpet being replaced twice over the years.
You do need to reuse the divider/finish trim as I'm not sure it is Reproed

The separation point on mine is approx 3.25" 3.5".
So this puts the carpet edge right under/along the trim.
I tried to place the carpet under the vinyl and then re-install the trim but couldn't get it set in where I thought it looked right.
So trimming/cutting a nice straight edge on the carpet allowed me to set it in nicely under the trim. It had been holing up for several seasons now with no issues.
The 3M adhesive is perfect for this task.

If you're re-using your vinyl then that would be the dictation on to where yours is.
I don't know why they offer 5" & 8", I've never seen any variations that wide/high ??

Thanks, Jeff. How is the chrome strip attached to the door panel?

The chrome strip has 12 or so pointed tabs on the backside that once placed through the card get bent over.
