Default How to get OEM paint off signal lenses.

I'm going to ask some random questions here which could technically fit into other topics but I'd rather get responses from people working on the same vehicles as I am

First, any good way to get the OEM silver paint off parking lamp lenses, and suggestions for suitable silver paint to replace it?

Second, on a totally different subject ... what goes in first, window glass or the weather stripping? Seems like it would be easier to wiggle the glass around without the stripping, but I'm not sure if a person can get to the necessary locations to install the stripping with the glass in.

Thanks

I would try lacquer thinner on a rag, test a small spot first. If your talking about the door glass weather strip I would put that in first .

I think I have a thread on this for the 68 turn signals. I stripped, polished & repainted mine. Turned out nice. I think I used something similar to argent silver. I'll see if I can find the thread.

So here is the thread. However, I didn't mention how I stripped them. I am 95% sure I used glass beads at low pressure to remove all the paint. I did not use any chemicals. it might have put a slight haze on the painted surface of the plastic, but I don't recall that being an issue at all. might have even given the paint something to stick too. I did sand & polish the lenses after stripping them, then painted so they were ready to install afterwords. lots of work, but not terrible.

68ragtop, thanks for the tip, I beaded mine and it took the paint off perfectly with very little fogging of the plastic, after paint it looked fine.

Very cool!

I realized after seeing how easy the paint comes off the plastic why so much of the paint on mine was missing. if your lower valance isn't painted yet, I would make sure the edges of the lens insert area are bent over just enough so they don't scrape your paint off. no sharp edges to undo you efforts. I also found traces of sliver paint on that thin leading edge of the plastic lens. did you paint that edge as well? I did on mine. I'm guessing GM's process was not all that particular at the time. I would think some of the edges had paint & some didn't, but thats just a guess. Must have had some mass production mask off system & that was the transition area? Not hours of 3M making tape like us hobbyists do
