Default Engine ID

Friend just pulled engine for a rebuild. There is no ID on front of block such as WS or WT. No numbers either. The date code on dist pad reads II47. Just behind passenger side head on block, reads 9792968. Any help appreciated.

A quick Google of the number says...it's a 428. The date would make it a '68 model year.

Has 3 freeze plugs, if that helps.

I thought the 428 engines had 428 on the side of the block. THere is nothing on this block.

The lack of a Manifest Code stamping and Engine Unit No. might be because it was ground off. Otherwise, it may have been a block used for a Service Replacement motor. If SR, look for a stamping alongside the Timing Chain Cover a few inches below where you would normally find the Manifest Code stamping.

SR blocks would not get a Manifest Code stamped on them.

I'm no expert on the '68 cast 428 blocks but I'm guessing since this was a pretty early model year block casting, very possible the additional identifiers cast on the side of the block had not yet begun at the time this block was cast.
