Default Anybody else raising an eyebrow at the GM truck market?

The pricing on full size 2500HD trucks is so crazy right now. Chevy Dealers are are listing 5 year old Silverados & Sierras at the same price or higher than they were brand new after incentives just 2 years ago. in late 2019, You could buy a new 2019 LTZ duramax 72K invoice brand new for near or sometimes under 60K at the end of the year. I thought that was tall money! Now that gets you into the 3-5 year old used market with lots of miles on the newer ones. Then some people listing there private owned trucks just to jump on the wagon to see if somebody will pay up huge money for worn out stuff. The local dealers here have nothing new available & just a handful of way overvalued used.

What is your projection? Do you think GM will will ever get the lots full again, & will there be decent incentives to be had some day? The cost of new trucks has increased by nearly 7%? & the dealers who do have them are now at sticker price. I don't know how GM is making ends meet. If they are not getting government help already, are we setting up for another bailout? I'm pretty sure they are not building respirators, & I find it hard to believe this is all about chip shortages. It has to be a much more involved problem?

Thoughts?

I couldn't say, but I will say when I was looking for a truck in 2015 and went to the GM dealer, they gave me the cold shoulder and a "whatever" when I was looking to test drive some of their trucks. When I saw the sticker price of a 4x4 crew cab 6' bed truck was $63k, I just couldn't believe it. I saw the sticker for a Duramax that was almost $75k. That was a house down payment! The Dodge and Ford trucks weren't much better, but their dealers were way more willing to try and work with me.

I bought a used Ford for $30k and that was a deal.

This is not a GM issue. All the lots are almost empty. I could sell my 10k mile 2019 F150 for 5K over what I paid new. It is chip shortage and capitalistic / opportunistic greed.

GM trucks got hit with an ugly stick (basically the whole tree) in 2019. Until they fire their current designer, I don't see myself owning any new GM products.

I have never been a fan of the upside down face on any vehicle. The blinkers should not be on the hood imo. Reminds me of the aztec. However the GMC 2500 isn't too bad. the reflectors in the wheel well trim is odd, but otherwise is good looking. The grill and trim on the high country is not as bad, but still prefer the look of the GMC in the 2500 series.

Here's a good example. $14K + over the original sticker & its used.

some people are buying dumb that feel they have too right now for whatever their reason, but com'on now
Might as well ask 6 figures, so it completes the look.

The used car market is up in general, I thought I saw a figure the other day of on average 37% . That is all used cars, not just GM. My friend had a 2020 Colorado Z- 71 and traded it in on a new Silverado for $4000 more than they paid for it a year ago. Used car prices are crazy, same as housing prices.

Truck and SUV prices are crazy across the board. My niece and her husband just paid 29K for a 2016 4-Runner and it was a base model and 2wd.

Smart people would negotiate truck purchases with air conditioner and lumber barter deals. Anyone think there will be a brassiere shortage coming? I don't mean that in a sexist way, purely market analysis, consumer impact perspective.

When I bought my Duramax new in 2004 it was $40,000. After a couple years of $671. payments every month and a annual registration fee of $500. PLUS a smog inspection I was done with that mess. I can't imagine how one can justify paying $80,000 for a truck unless your making money with it. Yikes.

Local dealer here is selling new Chevy 2500 trucks from $37-50K. Not highly optioned ones but basic WT trucks with the 6.6, trailer packages, A/C and power windows/locks. You know, what trucks used to be.

Fully agree. Most people drive these overpriced monstrosities around as a status symbol, particularly in the south. My 2wd mid 1980's Toyota pickup has done everything I needed for decades and I average 30 MPG in mixed driving conditions.

Going by current asking prices, my 2013 2500 LTZ is worth what I paid for it over eight years ago.

Everything runs in cycles. DK how long this cycle will be at the top of it's curve but if you can wait a year perhaps things will back to where they were in '19? Nobody knows and you can't time the market.

In my part of PA dealer lots are bare. I was down in the Houston area a week ago and was surprised at how full dealer lots still were. I wonder what the ratio of lease/buy is? When I bought my truck back in 2018 the salesman told me I was a rare one, buying vs leasing. I don't see any new money moving into the area.

The LS motors in GM vehicles have finally been gaining the reputation they deserve. Toyata has been living off of name only for years, same old tired engines and design. Honestly any domestic truck is Better than these foreign imposters. Supply and demand

i paid 35k new in feb 2017 for a crew 2500hd 4x4 gasser with an msrp around 44.5k, optioned about how you described above, vinyl floor and all. it is my family truckster and i am thrilled with the truck. my favorite part is when my kids finish eating food in the back and ask what to do with the wrappers, i say “throw it on the floor, thar’s why i bought a cheap truck!!!”

perfectly comfortable as a daily, i honestly don’t know why people need more?
