The consensus thru this and other sources certainly seems to be "Black"...
Have seen many pics of cars with White....
I know this means nothing....
Would love to hear from any 69 Firebird 4 spd owners.....
On a side note i seem to think that 3 spd. firebird shifter balls were all black...Cant say i've ever seen a white one of those...
Thanks in advance for any info..

Looking at the Parts catalog, the 67 and up had black knobs including 3 speed. (but 3 speed did not have shift pattern on them, different part # )

The 66 and older had white knobs it looks like.
The walnut knobs were available also, with 3 speed also with no shift pattern on them.

Didn't see any white knobs after 1966? (from factory)

All the 4 speeds I had had T-handles, grey or white plastic.

Both my T/A and 69 400 Bird have black knobs, the only other choice that I am aware of is the optional wood knob. That knob will be listed on the PHS if it came with one from the factory.

My 69 TA Muncie 4 Speed has a white knob. (I also have the original yelloed knob) as well as my 69 convertible HD Dearborn 3 Speed (I have the original knob) . Both cars were points judge many years ago, AACA, never dinged for point on either cars on that item. Not that it's gospel, but seen many TA's including original RAIV with black knob as well.
So clear as mud !!

While I have seen white knobs on 1969's (and remember anyone could have put one on over 50+ years), I do not recall seeing any PONTIAC literature with white knobs being used after 1966 or as being offered as original equipment.

Either a black ball or a wood knob.

Idk how much relevance this will have being it’s camaro research group but it’s got some good info.

Especially about different shift knobs . : like that non console cars had the shift pattern console cars did not.

http://www.camaros.org/shifters.shtml

Many of the part numbers though camaro diagrams were 979 numbers

Camaros with console had the shift pattern on the console plate thus plain shift knob. Z28 with console had chrome aluminum ball, I have one on mine.

I stand corrected on the "white" answer I gave, its BLACK.
Learn something new everyday about my TA. Any suggestions on where to get the correct black one?

If you don’t mind trading and arm and a leg there’s one on eBay that’s NOS

I believe weight is different between repops and originals. I don’t plan on weighing one often myself but if originally is your thing and you’ve got the $$ it’s there.

I like originality but at that price that’s a down the road piece for me for sure.. maybe if it was the last peice I needed.

Here is the info most accurately dated MPC (fall 69). First pic is from the illustration catalog and the second is from the chassis catalog.

Both are clear that they were black. Full-size cars shifted from white to black in 65. A body switched in mid 66. 68-69 Fbird’s were black too.

The only question mark is the 67 bird which had a one year only part number with no color indicated and what looks like a Chevy pn. However I looked up the three speed version and it is black so the 67 Fbird 4speed was most likely black also.

Interesting that the 68-69 Fbird used the same shift knob as the 66-69 GTO and 65-68 big cars but the 70 GTO knob was a different pn.

However there can be mistakes, for example the 69-70 GP knob is marked as being black but it was actually a walnut knob (the walnut knob was optional on other cars but standard on a GP), the price confirms it is a wood knob.

The reason the GP walnut knob is a different pn is because it had a different indicator inlay. Strangely the GP walnut knob used the same inlay that was used on the 70+ Fbirds but with a wood rather than leather knob.

I saw the ad a few days ago on eBay, it was priced ridiculously but I can’t find it now so maybe it wasn’t such a ridiculous price after all.
