Default 1970 grand prix vinyl top

Just bought a 70 GP SJ for a major project. It has at least 3 paint jobs and is a mess under the hood. It is not a vinyl top car but I THINK I want to add a vinyl top. Just love the look. Anybody done this? How big of a job or am I nuts?

I put the vinyl top back on my 70 - love the look.
Personal preference is going with the original "Halo" top.
You'd need to find the stainless original moldings to use as a template.

Default I believe that you're thinking of the 'Landau' top.

ALL factory 1969 and 1970 Grand Prix vinyl tops have the 'halo'.

There is a narrow (~1") strip of painted body color between the drip moldings and the color-matched vinyl top moldings. And the pillars are pointed body color.

It gives the impression of a halo around the door window, courtesy of John Delorean's styling team.

Unlike the tops on GTOs which covered the pillars and went from drip rail to drip rail.

I think padget is thinking of landau tops which covered only the back half of the roof. If you see a 69-72 GP with a vinyl top that isn't the "halo" style like in the last photo then it is aftermarket or added by the dealer when the car was new.

These perimeter moldings are held in place by studs (similar to the studs that hold the windshield molding clips), you can replicate this with rivet studs instead. Those perimeter moldings were painted on the inner portion to match the top, this had the effect of "thinning" them, a nice look. A variation in 69 only is that the backlite (rear window) moldings were grain textured and color matched to the vinyl top rather than typical stainless (in 70-72 the rear window moldings were stainless).

I just joined and read your thread. I'm removing the vinyl top off my 70 Grand Prix 455 HO / 4-Speed. IF you still need the moldings, let me know;

Paul,

Small world, I’m on the road this week so I’m a hotel room and was watching an old Hawaii Five O episode from 69-70 or so and I saw the email from PY ping in. The funny coincidence is that the name (character, not actor) of the governor of Hawaii in the show was Paul Jamison.

Aloha
