Default 1965 GTO pending purchase opinion/value

Hi all. I am looking at a 65 GTO, original WS, 4 speed. It has been restored professionally, but is still needing some corrections, such as hood paint (damage) and front bucket bottoms were installed on the wrong side etc.
It is in the colors I wanted, blue/blue and seems like a nice car, (photos, all documents and phone discussions).
I am having a hard time coming to grips that this car will cost me in the upper 50's and still need about 3k in work.
Need some folks to chime in.....

Thank you

It really depends on the quality of work.... 3k in a punch list is less than 10% of the price of the car. When you put it in that perspective that's not bad in my book. '65's are bringing nice money these days. I went well past the 50k mark with the Lemans I just finished, bearing in mind it was a full nut and bolt rotisserie restoration. That being said, you're not going to build that car yourself for that price... and if you can't do it yourself you'd be more than double. Check and compare here in the for sale section and the usual suspects online.... there aren't many to choose from to begin with. That being said, i would think you could get him down into the low 50's but it would need to be a top quality car too IMHO.

Your description does not match my expectation of a car that should sell in the upper 50's. If these simple things are blatantly incorrect, I would be suspicious of everything.

I would think you could find something in the condition stated for <$50K.

For reference, here are the BaT auction results for 1965 GTOs...

Thanks for the replies. In some instances I find that I may be too darn picky?

If there's damage to the hood the seller should fix that, as far as the seats go there shouldn't be any money involved just labor.

Looks pretty well restored. The radiator top flap to direct air into the radiator should be folded down, not lying on top.

Agreed, I had no problem putting more than 10% more into my car after buying it last fall, to get things corrected that I wanted (but didn't need) to change. Biggest expenses were a set of new Coker redline radials and full-body color correction, partial Paint Protective Film (PPF) covering, and full ceramic coating to protect it here in Florida. Another was a full console install that added up to quite a bit, plus a new "correct-look" AGM battery that looks like original Delco but is reliable. Then things to make it more of a driver than a show car, like a new steering idler arm, new trans yoke, rebalanced driveshaft, and swapped rear gears down to 3.23's with posi for better highway manners.

That thing looks nice, I assume they have provided the PHS documentation and you have verified the VIN plate is original, and then checked the firewall tag versus PHS to see if that matches also?

Good luck!

Yes, I have checked the car out and loaded it on the trailer, a long 1400 mile long trip. It is a pretty nice car and drives better than I remembered, although the 3;90 rear gear is a bit low!

Thank all of you for your input!

Yes please do post some pictures for us when you can .
Which shade of Blue exterior is it ?

Factory 3.90 (71P) cars were pretty wicked beasts for their day.
Some were M20 (779) and some M21 (778) ... with the 3.90
PHS copy is usually always interesting to see on them too

Congratulations !

Default Home!

Made it back home ok. Got the car in the shop and have given it a good going over. It is a better car than I expected. I have corrected a lot of
Minor stuff.
This thing is a beast, with the M21 and 390 gear it is a handful when you open the tri power.
All fun!
