Default 1969 GTO With Green Glove Box Trunk Release, Who Else?

I thought this Green Glove Box Trunk Button was a 1970 early GTO thing, my 1969 GTO has it?

It has a lot of options for a Convertible, AC, Cruise, Front Disc, Hood Tach, Front Marker Lights, but this green vs black trunk button is a new one I'm just learning about.

Any info, curious since I like finding out about an the funny GM lady minute stories of part swaps and screw ups to make build times.

Thanks

Have never ran across a "green" trunk release button in a '69 GTO that was factory equipped with pwr trunk release. What color is the pigtail coming out of the trunk release, black or pink? Does the car have pwr trunk release option on the invoice copy?

Power trunks were often added by dealers at delivery or even some time after. Common dealer add-ons include remote mirrors, door edge guards, clocks, radio upgrades etc. Of course anyone could have added it anytime in the last 53 years!

One indicator I've noticed is that when the trunk release was factory installed the trunklid tension rods were set differently. A car without a power trunk should pop completely open as you turn the key to release the latch. A power trunk car should have the lid just lift an inch or two when unlocked until you lift it the rest of the way by hand. I imagine this was done so that when you pushed the button inside the lid didn't fly open.

Could also be that the original 69 button broke (they are prone to break) and was replaced.

Ya when I hit it, pops up about 1".

Could be a replacement button but I've owned since 96 and my uncle before me didn't swap it.

I'll check for the buttons back pigtail soon.

North ... right on the money, my power release 68 that has never been touched does just that .. pops up about an inch.

Was great when I was a kid for sneaking friends into the drive in. I'd put them in the trunk and pop the lid as I rolled slow down the dark access road after the ticket booth.

OK, sorry, back to the button topic.

Here's a picture of the rearend of the green, glovebox sensor button. There's 2 separate males that have female connectors on it.

That is the later style button from the 70’s. Folding “ears” on the switch negated the need for a retaining nut.

As previously mentioned either the option was added later in the life of the car or the switch was replaced when the original failed.

Thanks, probably a later redo since the trunk pops up an inch like the factory install mod.

If I find a factory 69 switch, will it connect in the rear the same?

What color is the pigtail wire coming out of the trunk release solenoid?

Here's some trunk latch and cable (Pics 1-2)

Also is this loose connector for the trunk light?

Another indication of factory installed power trunk is the latch release mechanism. Manual latches Will be covered in factory body color paint because they were installed before the body was painted. However, cars with factory installed power trunks had the latch and related wiring installed after the car was painted so no paint on the latch mechanism or the three bolts that retain it.

Of course most cars have been repainted at least once so they will have later overspray on them but not from the factory applied paint

This car has been painted 2 times already by the same guy, my Uncle. But I can tell the latch is more the factory crystal turquoise versus the new color.

So you're thinking this was a manual latch that was then modified after the fact for a trunk release?

Power Latches, bolts, wiring were always installed afterwards so shouldn’t have any factory overspray

Here are pictures of a factory install switch and latch on a factory paint car. You can sort of see the two connector wires behind the hole for the glove box light.

Can’t see in these pics but the bolts are black cad. On a manual trunk car they’d be natural metal but heavily painted body color.

By comparison here is a bunch of manual latches with factory overspray and a used power unit with no paint anywhere.

While we are on this topic ... anyone have a diagram of the wire routing for the remote trunk release from the glove box to the trunk area? I left mine coiled up and hanging out of the trunk lid from the hole by the hinge ... looks WAY too long just to go over to the driver side harness.

By the way ... I agree on the paint, underside paint on my trunk lid is still OEM, no paint on the power trunk latch.

Attached are the instructions for the dealer installed trunk release. I believe, not positive, the factory installed wiring followed the transmission tunnel on the passenger side then up and through the pass side rear back rest

The cars I have with factory installed trunk are very similar to that except that at the back seat they run up the floor right against the inner quarter panel. This makes sense since dealer install instructions are sometimes different to reduce the amount of disassembly needed. The exception to what I said is if the car has a power antenna then they ran the wire into the antenna guard under the back seat.
