Default My belt driven turbo 406 runs

I have been playing with this little project for the last couple of months and finally overcame all the obstacles (to start it...) and fired her up today. OMG, it is loud through the mufflers...

This is as much of a experiment for the next motor as it is for a performance increase on this one.

The short block is not exactly ideal being a 557 block with stock rods and heavy TRW pistons. Long story short, this motor was funded/started back in 1996 while I was in Bosnia. It does have head and main studs and ARP rod bolts. The cam is a less than ideal XE274, intake is a TKII, carb is a blow thru modified Holley 600HP. For ignition, I went back to my old mech adv Mallory and limited it to 12 crank degrees of advance (being cautious) and 8 degrees of initial. Jets are 73/82 with a 6.5PV.

Heads are 96cc D-ports, pistons are .015 in the hole, head gaskets are .036 which added up to 8.3:1 compression.

The turbo is a Thomas "Geoff" Knight belt driven. The drive ratio is 4.6:1. Bracketry is all homemade thanks to a Lowes and Advance Auto close by.

It started right up. She wants more than 8 degrees, I took it briefly to 12 and currently have it set at 10. I definately need to bump up the fuel pressure, I left it at 8PSI from the regulator believing the boost refrence whould help. Pressure dropped down to 2-3 PSI so I will bump the pressure up 3-5PSI more.

Did 1/2" Stud help with the bracketry?

D'oh! You're right, I should have known you weren't involved when he said he actually went to Lowes and Advanced Auto and spent $3...instead of using whatever was lying around the garage.

Thumbs up

Looks awesome. Nice work.

Ya think that width serpenteen belt will keep up with the boost?

What are you using as a tensioner?

Question

What's the purpose of the cable that is wrapped around the discharge of the blower?

That 6 rib serpentine will probably slip when its in boost. You may want to look at a minimum 10 rib for moderate boost levels. Nice concept...keep the pictures and updates coming.

Yes, it's essentially a centrifugal supercharger at this point, but you already knew that.

In addition to Scott's question about the stranded cable, how else is the unit fastened to the engine besides the one fastener going to the same bracket the stranded cable is mounted to?

Just an educated guess. To keep some of the vibration down with the long tube to the hat and couplers in between.

I would also keep a close eye on your plugs (A/F ratios) and upping the boost with a non equal length dual plane intake.

Default A few more pics

Here are a few more pics as I was building this. The upper cable was to prevent or
reduce any forward twist/shift of the turbo.

I "pressed" a tension pulley on one of the support brackets to take out some of the slop from the long belt. I slightly bent the tube when doing it, I will redo it here in the near future. I am looking for a a/c bracket to further support the bar off the head.
